Yes, like a lot of the previous reviewers, I first came to Captain A's in 1973, a year after it opened, and it was new, fresh and different, visiting yesterday it felt dated and old (bit like me!!). Nothing had changed, had my usual deluxe burger (we used to eat
here every Sunday evening when a student at City College and living in Southwell Lodge)which was good and served with the usual relishes but don't think they have redecorated in the last 40 years, still have the car coming out of the wall! The waitress was good, did her job, but just felt it was missing the buzz of old, and it wasn't busy at lunchtime, can remember waiting for a table when the queues were out of the door. Sad really, but too much competition to rely on past praises.

First visit in over 20 years and little has changed in respect of decor and theme. What has changed is fact that place is now dated and feels grubby and food no longer value or special. Burger tasteless and buns and chips appear no longer to be of their original quality. Chilli vey bland and would not be tolerated in USA.

Service was pretty good though albeit felt a bit rushed. Anybody with a 40 inch waistline or more will struggle to fit between table and seat.

To make the trip a bit more memorable you can have a sweepstake on how times one of the waitresses uses the nomenclature of "Guys" when addressing customers.

I would go so far as to say I will not be returning, I very much doubt I will.

Last visited Captain A's around 10 years ago and actually ate there a few times throughout the early 90s, so to re-visit now and be presented with such a washed up, has been menu providing miniscule portions at ott prices is massively disappointing.

The place itself is excellent, very cosy, quaintly quirky, still playing great music but overall promising so much more than it once delivered.

To be charged £30 for a couple of very average burgers a microscopic potato salad, a glass of wine and 2 soft drinks is, in my humble opinion, a little insulting.

Maybe I'll re-visit in another 10 years if the reviews improve..... significantly!

As a younger couple we use to go in the Seventy's when tis place "rock'd" sadly it has lost that buzz, i dont know why but it is a crying shame. The food is only just average which compared to the past is a great shame but, at least they can and should improve !!

We returned to Captain Americas and had forgotten what a great place it was. It was busy on the run up to Christmas but the food was excellent the service was excellent and the music was excellent. We had cheeseburger and fries and asked for the burger to be well done with no pink which it was . The little extras make all the difference. condiments on the table and mints after the meal and a pot of water to go with the tea which is quite rare these days! Unfortunately they didn't take American Express but that was the same when we were in the US so that didn't matter. Would highly recommend. A very enjoyable lunch and very reasonably priced and huge portions.
