“Staff were so friendly but the rooms were awful!!”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

I really have to start off by saying the reception and bar staff in this hotel are fab!! So friendly and helpful. They let me check in at 10am with no fuss. Dropped an ironing board to my room straight after i requested. The hotel had loads of free parking at the back and front of the hotel for guests. Perfect location if you are going to riverside or into the city. 5 minute walk to riverside and the train station. 15-20 minute walk to the city. Unfortunatley this is where the positives end.
The room (room 17) was completely awful. Looked like it had had a quick 5 minute clean. The room looked like it hadn't had a refurbish since it had been opened. It was so grubby around the edges. Needed a bottle of bleach taken to the bathroom and a good couple of hours scrub to the whole room. The shower in the bathroom had very little pressure. The shower curtains keeps no water in the shower at all. I ended up soaking up a pool of water on the floor and window after having each shower. It really was the worst room i've ever stayed in. But this said, i still can't say i dis-like this hotel. The staff really do make up for it. Such a shame. If the rooms were upgraded this hotel would be a little gem.

Firstly, as other reviews say, the decor is dated and damaged. The bathrooms are perhaps the prime areas in need of TLC as these are perhaps the area we are most sensitive about, second only to the bed. But the bed was fine. Clean white sheets and pillowcases and that is essentially what we need ! The bedroom had a TV (not flat screen but no problem !), plenty of tea/coffee and biscuits. Yes the room has some sort of all in one seventies unit across the wall and some bygone intercom or radio or space shuttle control thingy in the headboard (never did work it out). There was a phone in the room and the built-in wardrobe and blue colour scheme reminded me of my primary school classroom. In the lounge there is a nice telly, very reasonably priced bar and, well, get over the patterned carpet, the staff were friendly and welcoming. After a few minutes in the lounge it felt like a favourite well-worn shoe. At the price i paid (or rather the company paid) i have no issue. If you want the Ritz, you pay for it but if you just want something that says "i am what i am" with no pretending or corporate drivel this is it. May it carry on, perhaps just tart the bathrooms up a bit.

Room Tip: I was on middle floor and the footsteps above were loud, try and get a top floor, may be better but...

After stupidly locking myself out of the house I wondered around Norwich looking for somewhere cheap but was encountering Holiday Inn style shockers wanting £85 or £105! Before losing hope I found this place close to town and the station and for only £35 at 2am it was a bargain. The bed was comfy but the duvet was just a throw and the alarm clock didn't work and I overslept but apart from that, very tidy and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Being an old building the floorboards creak so ask to be in a room away from the staircase!

I chose the Lansdowne on price, and how close it was to the station, needing somewhere to sleep after an extended boozy lunch with old colleagues. Looking to recent reviews AndyT has it bang on the money, crumbing decor and seriously in need of decorating.
I might have over looked the peeling, painted over and chipped 1980s wallpaper if I hadn't opened my curtains in the morning and lent on a thick layer of dust on the windowsill. The carpet was about two years overdue some attention with some shampoo and a cleaning system.
While the bathroom was OK the rusting towel rail made you look closer and notice the tile sealing by the bath taps was filthy. The original hinges on the wardrobe door have obviously failed and the door has been bodged back together leaving a 1" gap. it would appear the guest in the room above couldn't find anywhere where the floorboards didn't creak

I was meeting people elsewhere for breakfast so cannot comment.

Twenty five years ago I guess this was quite a comfortable business hotel but now the decor is shabby and even the attempts to brighten things up with a coat of paint look old.
When checking out, beyond, "How would you like to pay?" and "Thank you" (for paying) nobody asked if everything was OK or if I had had breakfast just the sort of basic customer service you expect in the hospitality industry.
In summary, a little tatty and passed its' sell by date. Could be lifted by some attention to details. People will go to either of the well known chains across the river even if they are a tenner more.

Room Tip: Pray you're not on the same floor as a dozen clubbers on a weekend away.

White van-man hotel, or in the new lingo "Metro Hotel", which means they don't really do food in the evening. Dated, crumbling decor; apparently being done up, but I saw no sign of that. The hotel hasn't seen a proper lick of paint since, in my estimate, about 1980. Slow service at reception, but when eventually served, it was friendly. First hotel I've been to where they give you the TV remote with your key. Very steep stairs to the rooms, but there is an ancient lift available. Labyrinth room floors; narrow corridors, dimly lit. This was I thought staying at a Soviet hotel would be like.

Single room was surprisingly large; all the furniture looked ancient. I was disappointed the Austin Powers radiogram (very 1960s) built into the headboard didn't work; it had a strange mechanical alarm system. Still, it gave me buttons to press. Room was basic; battered wall paper, but it was all clean. Shower room was pretty worn out; cracked tiles, mould etc. Pitiful cold water pressure, so the shower was scalding. Toiletries; soap, shampoo, thats it. 2 small towels.Slept well on the bed; nothing bit me, and the area was quiet.

Although there is no evening restaurant, the bar did serve some hot food, all of it seemingly out of the microwave. At one time, this hotel did proper food, judging from the size of the kitchens you can spy from the rear carpark. Friendly bar staff.

Free Wifi in the bar area, and there is a BT Openzone you can pick up in the rooms.

Breakfast; I was expecting the usual budget rubbish, but was surprised. They actually did a superb English breakfast; thick rashers and decent sausages. Stunned to see a waiter turned out immaculately in uniform.

This hotel should have been terrible, but the friendly staff, good breakfast and a sound sleep are all pluses. They need to get those radiograms working again.

A group of us stopped there are the final game of the season. It was handy for the football as stadium was less that 0.5mile away. Staff at hotel were very pleasant and helpful would stay there again as its fits the purpose. Handy for the city centre and train station.

Get what you pay for and serves a purpose if u want a 4* star hotel then check in at the Premier Inn or Holiday Inn. This is a 2 star hotel, i have stopped in a 3* hotel before and got a poorer stay in a different town.
