Visited midweek to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Loved the menu with limited choice and the varied specials. Friendly service. Food cooked to order. This is a pub restaurant that needs to be visited or we risk losing it. Great place to eat.

I only visited on a Sunday for lunch, so I can’t comment on the regular menu as only roasts were available. I agree absolutely with the many reviews which rave about the decor, ambiance, cleanliness and friendliness of the place - it’s immaculate and modern and the staff are faultless.

However, I watched as plate upon plate of roast meat was brought out, accompanied by (as others have noted) home-made stuffing, only to be provided myself with (the one vegetarian option of) roasted cauliflower. I have no issue with there being only one option, although this is quite the contrast to the omnivorous range of choice, and vegetarian main-courses do follow a trend, with the 2018-19 ubiquitous offering very firmly focussed on cauliflower. But that was it. No marinade; no sauce. (It did come with gravy, but the cauliflower hadn’t been dressed before going in the oven.) No stuffing. No evidence of roasting, either - it wasn’t raw, and gladly hadn’t been cooked to such a degree that it was mush - but it was nowhere near its sweet, nutty potential.

It was accompanied by a Yorkshire pudding, but that was the extent of the protein on the plate. No other egg; no cheese; no beans or pulses; no nuts; no seeds. (Still, at least there were no ‘meat alternatives’.) What there was was a side (shared with the meat-eaters) of beautiful vegetables... one third of which was also cauliflower.

Overall - for the same price as the far better balanced meals on offer for flesh-eaters - it really isn’t worth returning, or at least not for a Sunday roast, until they pop a slice of protein-rich stuffing on the plate, or add a lentil ragu or... anything, really, that won’t leave you hungry and full of nothing but carbohydrate... and actually roast the cauliflower!

For somewhere which - quite rightly, as far as I can see - prides itself on home cooking and excellent produce, the Marlingford Bell has a long way to go to stop short-changing its non-flesh-eating patrons. Please improve this, because I would love to come back.

Thank you for your 2 star review. We always welcome feedback either during your meal or through Tripadvisor, as in this case.

We’re sorry the Vegan Roast Cauliflower did not meet your expectations. As you can tell from our other reviews we are always keen to please and I wish we had had a chance to rectify this issue while you were dining with us.

Following your review, I have asked the kitchen team to look into providing a separate Vegetarian option on our Sunday roasts. We feel the main menu already caters for many tastes and I appreciate your assertion that perhaps this dish is not ideal as a vegetarian option on a Sunday.

We will endeavour to come up with something appropriately balanced and tasty for our Vegetarian customers and for those who have enjoyed the Vegan cauliflower roast it will remain as an option on Sunday.

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for details of the new vegetarian option and hopefully you will return and give us a second chance to impress.

Kind Regards

Took some friends for an evening meal it was so good we thought we would try Sunday lunch. Cannot fault the meals we have had. Food is appealing, tasty, and good portions. Very good value. The staff are polite, everywhere is very clean. Also you are not cramped and pushed in. You can take anyone here and I am sure you would not be disappointed. We will certainly frequent as often as we can. Well done everyone of the staff!

Not been here before. Online reviews looked good so gave it a try. Both had roast dinners. Very tasty with a good selection of vegetables and quality homemade stuffing. The deserts were top notch. Service was friendly and very efficient. The pub itself was clean, tidy and tastefully decorated. All in all just what we like for a casual Sunday lunch. Will definitely return and would recommend to others.
