“Pleasant change from usual Indian fare”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

I really like Indian food. But sometimes it's good to try something a bit different from the usual chicken balti and lamb rogan josh; Namaste India definitely provides this.

Located on a small street between Castle Meadow and London Street, the restaurant is unusually shaped, with a high ceiling but only has about ten tables; it reminded me of a traditional shop with large windows. The is definitely one of those places where you need to study the options on the menu, including the drinks as they serve no meat or alcohol. However a mango lassi provided a very refreshing change from the more usual pint of Cobra.

After the popadums and pickles we started with spring rolls and tempura chillies, both clearly coming straight from the over, the latter being particularly delicious. For main I chose the sag paneer, which was very good but perhaps lacked the stronger flavours we're used to. However my friend's vegetable biriyani was much more flavoursome. The portions were just right; generous without having to eat too much or leave lots.

The service was always friendly and helpful; definitely worth a visit, but worth picking something spicier from the menu if you're used to the standard 'British curry'.

“Interesting”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

Namaste is halfway between a cafe and a restaurant, the decor is very basic but interesting. The menu is totally vegetarian, no meat or poultry at all, and all beverages are non-alcoholic (bringing your own is not a problem but corkage is charged per bottle on wine and beer) . The food is the soul centre of the place, and it's very good indeed. A great variety of regional veggie cuisine from India graces the menu and, from my own experiences, it's totally authentic. Service was the only let down, one asian lady was very pleasant and helpful but a young european lady did not have a clue how to attend tables, twice reaching across my plate to clear finished dishes whilst I ate and without even an excuse me, something I found particularly rude. That said I am not letting this jaundice my view of the restaurant and would strongly recommend it for the flavour and quality of the food.

“Will visit again”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

We went there without a booking and were seated immediately (despite it being a Saturday evening).I did not mean the restaurant was not busy...probably we were extremely lucky. The menu had a good selection of curries and other dishes, I was impressed with its authenticity and informative descriptions for each dish (especially helpful for those who don't recognise most names of curry dishes). The waiting staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was very quick to arrive. The food was exquisite, I could tell that they had used fresh ingredients and the portions were generous for the price.
