“One of Norwich's best kept secrets - a pub which brews its own wonderful beer, and a marvellous "secret "garden”
Reviewed October 27, 2011

In one of Norwich's older quarters - St. Benedict’s, this pub nestles by the side of the road, but with its unassuming (but smart) frontage you'd probably walk right past it. That would be a mistake. For this pub houses the Grain Brewery - a small and independent Brewery which produces a great range of its own very special Ales. Those of you who have read some of my other reviews, know that I am a Real Ale fan, and that I always mention the beer I find on offer. The Ale and the atmosphere here are second only to the Fat Cat, and that is saying something! My favourite ale here is the Grain Porter - it is delicious and so moorish. (My second favourite is their Grain Chestnut Ale.) They also offer equally wonderful Stout, Bitter, Summer and Winter Ales and even Wheat Beer. Inside it's an old and quirky place with large tables as well as nooks & crannies. Outside, the garden at the back occupies an enormous space, (much bigger than the pub itself), and you'd never know it was there. It's on several levels with lots of different areas, some shaded, and each with it's own feeling. They don't serve any food of their own here (concentrating on the Ale!), but they do have a great relationship with the sandwich shop next door. Place your food order at the bar, and the shop delivers right to your chair in the pub, or outside in the garden - terrific! You've just got to give this place a try.
