“Pity it isn't busier - it deserves to be!”
Reviewed November 23, 2013 via mobile

Visited for the second time, this time with my husband and parents. We had a terrific meal, and service was excellent. Creative menu, and extensive wine list. Will visit again. The only slight negative is that more people don't go; the lack of other guests does create a subdued ambience. I think they need to market themselves a little more aggressively!

“Scallops to die for...........................”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We ate in this restaurant as part of a deal with the Maid's Head Hotel and we both had a fabulous meal. Everything was cooked to perfection and served in a professional, unobtrusive way. There is a an al a carte menu or menu of the day and we picked and chose dishes from both with no problem. The scallop starter was without question the best thing I have ever eaten. Not the cheapest meal you will find in Norwich but possibly one of the best! There are only 2 slight faults: we asked the maitre' d a question about the statues in the restaurant and she had no idea about the answer so maybe all new staff should be told the history of the lovely old building so customers don't have to google answers! Also our dirty main course plates sat uncleared for far too long as befits such a professional establishment. Our waitress was mortified by this and so apologetic as they were busy so maybe extra staff on Fridays in future. Please don't be put off though - it really is a nice place to sit and eat gorgeous food and lovely wine. Go and see for yourselves!

“This restaurant should always be full!”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We ate two evening meals at Winepress@Wensum which is the restaurant within the Maids Head Hotel. Like many good restaurants the menu is small and will change with availability. The food is excellent in quality, quantity and presentation. The service is courteous and provided by well trained staff who clearly take a pride in their work without being aloof. We had some very palatable wine for the money we paid however the availability of 40 wines by the glass would afford the correct matching of food and drink. Next time we are there we’ll try it.

“Totally enjoyable!”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

To start with we got the coupon deal and saved 5 pounds on our meals which was helpful since we were using US dollars and needed all the savings we could get. Secondly, the service was terrific and all were helpful and friendly. Finally, the food was delicious. I had the leek soup which was wonderful and the steak with pepper sauce. The steak was cooked just as I requested it and was tender and juicy. I ate every bite and enjoyed it totally. My friend had the salmon and also enjoyed every bite. We ate here several times and were totally satisfied every time. We both would highly recommend this restaurant and the Pub too! It was a wonderful, delicious experience and would go again and again if we could.

“Good, but......”
Reviewed October 7, 2013 via mobile

The food was very good indeed but the portion size was at the point of being seriously mean. A bigger portion would cost the restaurant very little but add greatly to the experience. We were also told that if we added a tip on to our debit card payment that it would not go to the staff who served and fed us. If correct this is exceptionally poor and sufficient to put me off for good. But is it true? In short, great food but poor value.

Dear Ducatiboy,

Thank you for your review. We are pleased to see that you enjoyed your meal with us yet slightly disappointed to read that you felt our portion sizes could have been bigger. This is the first we have had such comments and will look into the matter.

I also apologise that you were misinformed about staff gratuities. We are 100% certain that staff receive gratuities that are paid for by card. We believe in rewarding all of the staff within the hotel which is why this gratuity cannot go directly to the staff member that served you but also the other team members that made your experience so enjoyable such as the chef's, kitchen porters, housekeeping team etc. This gets processed into staff wages as it unfortunately is taxable.

Once again I apologise that your experience did not meet your full expectations and we hope to welcome you back in the near future.
