Owner description: “Norfolk’s favourite building”Founded in 1096 and built using Normandy stone shipped from Caen, Norwich Cathedral is set in the 44 acre Cathedral Close, a peaceful city centre sanctuary. The Cathedral itself is one of the finest complete Romanesque buildings in Europe, with the highest Norman tower and largest monastic cloisters in England. Inside, the Cathedral tells almost 1000 years of history, with our enthusiastic volunteers on hand to talk you through the incredible stories of its past. There is more to see at Norwich Cathedral than you think. Our award-winning 21st century Refectory restaurant is open seven days a week, as is the Hostry which features a rolling programme of exhibitions, many of them featuring local artists. You can also experience the tranquillity of our expansive Library, Herb Garden or Japanese Garden, as well as guided tours of the building throughout the week.Afterwards, feel free to explore the lanes of the Cathedral Close, a quaint village just minutes from the bustling city centre, and stop for a picnic on one of our many well kept greens. Norwich Cathedral is a living centre for worship, learning and hospitality, extending a warm welcome to all our visitors from Norfolk and beyond.Part of the Norwich 12 - An initiative of Norwich Heritage, Economic & Regeneration Trust.

“Beautiful cathedral, expert tour guide”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Norwich Cathedral is well worth a visit with its spectacular Norman architecture, beautiful surroundings and expert as well as friendly tour guides. We spent an hour and 15 minutes listening to our guide explain the background to this wonderful building and point out some of the idiosyncrasies there. Suggested donation of £5 per adult is very reasonable, considering the much less beautiful and vastly overrated Westminster Abbey charges £18.
The refectory is ok for a quick snack, with great scones, although not that good for a full meal. Good access everywhere, even for wheelchairs.

“A place of coolness and calm and prayerfulness”

The magnificent sense of space and hundreds of years of worship. Charming welcome and plenty of literature to help discover the interesting history of the building. Good food too, in the refectory.

“Just a masterpiece”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

This is a MUST SEE for any visitor to the UK.

Also, the surrounds are well worth a walk around as they are almost as historic as the cathedral.

There are a number of good eating places too within a 5 minute walk.

“Beautiful cathedral”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

This is a one of a kind cathedral. Beautiful and with lots of history.

It has beautiful stained glass windows, a lovely courtyard, many beautiful small details and lots of ancient parts perfectly preserved. I couldn't believe it was free to enter, because it most cost a fortune to maintain all of this in such perfect state.

All in all I'd say this is a must see. I was lucky to have a good friend showing me around who is local to Norwich. It's really cool to have someone who knows the ins and outs. But there are also very kind people at the entrance who can tell you lots about the cathedral!

“Very welcoming”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

The reception was the most welcoming I've ever received in any of the cathedrals I've visited. The place itself is stunning, and the new restaurant is beautifully designed and blended into the building. On the day we visited there were children involved in activities round every corner. A real living cathedral, not a museum as can sometimes be the case. Thanks to all involved for a lovely experience.
