Owner description: “Norfolk’s favourite building”Founded in 1096 and built using Normandy stone shipped from Caen, Norwich Cathedral is set in the 44 acre Cathedral Close, a peaceful city centre sanctuary. The Cathedral itself is one of the finest complete Romanesque buildings in Europe, with the highest Norman tower and largest monastic cloisters in England. Inside, the Cathedral tells almost 1000 years of history, with our enthusiastic volunteers on hand to talk you through the incredible stories of its past. There is more to see at Norwich Cathedral than you think. Our award-winning 21st century Refectory restaurant is open seven days a week, as is the Hostry which features a rolling programme of exhibitions, many of them featuring local artists. You can also experience the tranquillity of our expansive Library, Herb Garden or Japanese Garden, as well as guided tours of the building throughout the week.Afterwards, feel free to explore the lanes of the Cathedral Close, a quaint village just minutes from the bustling city centre, and stop for a picnic on one of our many well kept greens. Norwich Cathedral is a living centre for worship, learning and hospitality, extending a warm welcome to all our visitors from Norfolk and beyond.Part of the Norwich 12 - An initiative of Norwich Heritage, Economic & Regeneration Trust.

What an outstanding place. A donation is suggested but optional. There was a service on so a small part was off limits unless you wanted to take part. Saw the baby Peregrine Falcons too.

I arrived on Sunday morning as the service was on. You can still go in to the large area not used for the service but it is broadcast everywhere so I sat and listened to the sermon quietly on my own and was incredible moved. very special space.

A must if you're visiting Norwich. So much to see and admire that it's difficult to pick out one or two particular highlights. For this reason I would strongly recommend taking advantage of the free guides. They are excellent and extremely knowledgeable, The refectory is also a perfect location for lunch or afternoon tea with delicious homemade cakes.

Very interesting, the falcons were nesting when we went and you can watch them on live cam from the café. We had a very nice snack in the café and food is good and very reasonable.

The Cathedral is beautiful, pale stones from Caen ensure it's longevity. The spire soars towards the sky and inside the nave soars high to the roof, supported by pillars and curving arches. A gallery part way up surrounds the nave and wide transepts flank it, and include two chapels. The cloisters are the largest in England with beautiful arches looking across a grass square which includes a labyrinth.

The Cathedral Close, at the front of the Cathedral, is entered from Tombland via one of two wonderful arches in the Close wall. Beautiful old buildings surround the large Close which extends to the south east. past a lovely herb garden. From there Ferry Lane takes you to the River Wensum, or head north east towards the medieval Great Hospital.

A lovely place to visit and explore.
