Owner description: If you have never visited the Cathedral of St John the Baptist – now’s the time! The Cathedral of St John the Baptist is the second largest Catholic Cathedral in the UK. After nearly a century as the parish church of the Catholic community in Norwich it became the mother church of the new diocese of East Anglia in 1976. Now a Grade 1 listed building, its external grandeur and magnificent interior, especially the fine stonework and beautiful stained glass, make it well worth a visit for those interested in religious, spiritual or architectural history. You can even take tours up the tower, and see the wonderful views of Norwich and beyond. Since the opening of the Narthex in May 2010, the Cathedral also has an education gallery, a shop, a refectory and a community garden. Not only is the Cathedral an inspiring setting, but it is also a wonderful place to relax. Open seven days a week – 7.30am – 7.30pm. Entrance is FREE. Part of Norwich 12 - an initiative of Norwich Heritage, Economic & Regeneration Trust.

Make a detour from the city centre to take in the Cathedral which represents the seat of long standing and continuing Catholicism in Norfolk. Not an ancient building but an example of Victorian gothic with a new visitors entrance and information centre. You can wander at your leisure and take in the atmosphere and spirituality of the building with ample oppurtunity for reflection in the smaller chapels

“Stunning purity”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

Superb building, probably because it's designed as a whole, and hasn't been modified much. Many cathedrals as multi-generational hotch potches.

Elegant, magnificent and simple, with wonderful stone carving - I was particularly taken by the plant carvings at the BASE of all the pillars of the nave, but the head-and-shoulders corbels (which are surely portraits of actual people) also c aught my eye.

I was surprised at the lack of wood carving, though. As a woodworker myself, I have often admired the skill of previous generations of carvers, and St John has none.

“Gothic Drama”

THE cathedral in Norwich. May not be in such salubrious surroundings as the CofE cathedral, but the drama and theatre of the interior and exterior leave the neutral in comparison city centre based effort in the shade.

“Well?”

So this is a historic building not much else going for it. Not even a pretty building, you would do better to visit the main Norwich cathedral near Tombland
