Owner description: The Museum of Norwich at the Bridewell proudly tells the story of the city and its people. The museum is now fully accessible and refurbished after a £1.5m redevelopment project. Come pay us a visit! The ancient building is packed full of collections and displays, with lots to enjoy by all the family. Highlights include the last surviving Jacquard loom in the city, fully restored to full working order, a recreated chemist shop, countless fantastic shoes, as well as engineering marvels, such as the world's first wire netting machine. Catch a film in our mini cinema, relax in the 1950s living room or listen to local people sharing their memories of the city. Find us in the heart of the charming Norwich Lanes area. We would love to welcome you to this unique museum.

I found this museum very interesting. It looked at the history of Norwich and I learned a lot about the city's past. The shoe gallery was exquisite! I also liked the replica of the old pharmacy and the old packaging of various groceries over time.

Hi Angela,
Thank you for posting a review. It's good to know you enjoyed your visit and learned more about the city's history. That was our intention when we redesigned the musuem, so we obviously succeeded! The shoes and the Pharmacy are some of my favourites too.
With best wishes,
Hannah, Curator

“Fascinating and well presented museum”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

I visited the museum on the afternoon of the 17th of May.

Fascinating and well presented with many interesting artifacts. Many items from everyday use, VIctorian costumes etc. . Though there are excellent displays about the old Norwich industries of shoe manufacture and weaving and Norwich in the wars the museum is very interesting whether you are particularly interested in Norwich or not.The museum provides a detailed insight into everyday life in the past.

There is an excellent pharmacist shop display. Information is easy to read and informative throughout the musem

Staff are extremely helpful and friendly.

“Fantastic museum, full of local history”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

I had visited this museum a few years back and was intrigued to see what had changed since the refurbishment. I initially went with my 2 teenage children quite close to closing time, we hadn't realised how much there was to see....hence another visit a few weeks later after both children (15 and 13) kept asking to see the rest. It was excellent, we went in the Feb half-term hols and there was so much to do: look at great displays, open drawers to find more hidden treasures, information via the telephone (lift the receiver to hear real accounts of life gone by: the 2nd world war memories especially good). There were accounts of when it was the Bridewell prison and I was fascinated to find out what misdemeanours had been committed and the sometimes rather harsh sentences that were issued! I particularly liked the ghosting effect of pictures of Norwich streets ie a black and white picture of a street during WW2, morphed with more up to date pictures. There is also a 1950s front room set up complete with tv and games cupboard containing the rather excellent magnetic robot game which both teens thought very clever (my Nanny had one of these games in her house). I can't recommend this museum highly enough, we will certainly be back! Thank you!!
