“Very Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2005

The website photo of this accommodation is completely misleading - this B& B is set on a bland and boring suburban street. Though the room was clean and presentable it was definitely not 5 star nor was the rather impersonal service. The bed was not turned down as promised and the breakfast was only passable (terrible, weak coffee). I would not recommend this venue to anyone seeking a real 'oldie worldie', sublime English B & B experience.

Catton Old Hall was, to our surprise after looking at the website, deep in very ordinary Norwich surburbia. We had thought that it was in a village or green belt setting. We found it very difficult to find on our arrival in Norwich and got lost a couple more times while we were there. Our room was very spacious and comfortable with a queen bed, sofa and large bathroom. The dinner was excellent as was the breakfast. Parking provided on site was welcome, but the sign on the front door warning in strong terms about letting in anyone unknown provided some misgivings about the area.

I've often though it strange how some reviews are out of step with the norm, having read other sparkling reviews mine seems quite contrary. It advertises itself as a 5 star ( tourist board rating )luxury b&b or small hotel. The room was £120 night, we stayed 2 nights, nearly walked out after arrival. Its situated next to a council estate in the suburbs of Norwich although well sheltered by tall hedges. It was the welcome that really turned us off, or lack of it, a scruffy kid from the estate showed us the basics and that was it. The place is historic ok, room had 4 poster, large, comfortable, best quality Egyptian cotton sheets, residents lounge downstairs, honesty bar , parking. But all this is for nothing if it hasn't even the charm of a Travel Inn! Breakfast was ok, my wife liked the fruit, cooked breakfast was mediocre.

I am dismayed at this review posted on your website. Situated in a Norwich suburb we are not near a council estate and have never advertised that we are in the countryside.
We are not a five star hotel. We are a five diamond guest house rated by both the English Tourist Board and the AA. These have inspectors who stay regularly. The young person who helps us part time is a polite, smart and atractive local young lady although slightly shy. We have numerous thank you cards and compliments from satisfied guests and many return to us time and time again. I am suprised at the comment about breakfast as we use fresh local produce and eggs from our own hens and are complimented daily on this! This guest did stay in our most expensive and largest room - other rooms are spacious and less expensive and this guest could have choosen one of these if he so wished. Our guests receive our personal welcome whenever possible. We are always delighted to talk to guests and ask for comments about their stay during and at check out. This guest did not inform us of any problem at any time. We feel this comment is misleading and unfair.

LOvely room, excellent breakfast, great value for money. Only downside is that it is a £6 taxi ride to city centre.

Unbeknown to me, my husband booked a night here for us in December 2002. After a very long day Christmas shopping in Norwich we arrived to a very warm greeting and shown to our room. The rooms have each been decorated differently with some beautiful furniture and we had a jacuzzi bath in our bathroom and lots of lovely smellies to go in it. We had dinner in the intimate and cosy dining room and the three course dinner was wonderful. Next morning we had a choice of breakfast, all cooked to perfection. It is still owned by the same people and it is still just as special. We will definitely try to visit again this Christmas.

We stayed for two nights, and had a fantastic time. The rooms were cosy and large, with beautiful features including exposed beams, and the ensuite with jacuzzi bath was utter bliss. The breakfast was delicious, and the idea of the Honesty Bar worked superbly! I would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in luxurious accommodation without the pretentious trappings of international chains.
