A great location in the centre of Norwich overlooking the cathedral and in short walking distance from the castle and shops . Quant and old hotel in parts , but we stayed in one of the new rooms overlooking the car park and cathedral . Lovely room. Service at reception and at breakfast was excellent and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a new room overlooking the car park ( which looks across to the cathedral ) . Some of the ne...

I have been going to the Maids Head Hotel for a weekly breakfast Rotary meeting for a number of years now and thought that it was about time I commented on how good they are particularly when Bruno is there to oversee things. Staff are always friendly and helpful and, even when busy, find time to have a chat.

We stayed here for one night, a Saturday. The location is great being just a stones throw from the beautiful cathedral, the river walk and all that Norwich city has to offer. Free parking at the back of the hotel was a bonus too. (There were no signs to the car park, it wasn't easy to locate in the dark).
Our room was in the modern part of the hotel, I was a bit disappointed. (221) A drab, soulless room with a multitude of stains on the otherwise clean carpet greeted us, the view was over the car park. I moved a small table over the largest of the stains wishing I'd brought a pair of slippers with me.
The bathroom was ok, although the shower was the most inefficient one I've ever stood underneath. It took an age even to get to body temperature. That's when I noticed someone else's hairs on the white tiles. Not a particularly good start to the evening.
The bar area was lovely, cosy and bathed in history.
Comfortable beds.
The breakfast was good. Very busy being a Sunday morning.

We are pleased to see that you enjoyed your time with us but we must apologise that we did not hit our usual high standards in relation to this stay with us. We have high standards here and we are extremely disappointed to see that we failed to meet them during your time with us.

Series of meetings arranged by an organisation at The Maids Head. Driving to Norwich was no problem (especially if you are a tractor spotter); no problem driving through the City to Tombland but then comes the question of where the car park was located. Once found entry to hotel by rear door. This hotel has lots of stairs from two or three steps to the usual amount. Wherever you go, mind the steps. Reception was quick, easy and pleasant. There is a lift to the upper floors but still there is walking to do along passages and once again, the steps to adjust to the levels of different parts of the old building. It maybe old but it is modern and very well decorated. The bedroom on the third floor was small - one occupant was enough. Room was well equipped but entry to the bathroom was down three steps. The bed was very cxomfortable. The food was excellent as was the service in the restaurant. The bar was well equipped but did get busy prior to meal times. Meeting rooms were good too. Next time, mine will be a bigger floor at ground level.

Room Tip: Ground floor if you want to avoid the steps.

From the front desk to the house keeping staff it was very well run by polite and efficient staff.
All meals there were excellent and the selection of all wines by the glass is an usual occurrence.

Just had a weekend away in sunny Norfolk, stayed at the Maids Head Hotel and had a fab time, this is about the 3rd time we have stayed here and it is always a pleasure. We stayed on something called a Seasonal Treat which included Dinner in the Wine Press and Prosecco & Chocolates in your room. We stayed in a Suite which was located at the front of the hotel in the "old" part of the building, I agree with previous reviewers about the road noise, but it was no more that in any city center hotel and we both slept well. The food in the restaurant both dinner and breakfast was very good, nice choice and helpful staff.
One advantage to this hotel is the location and the car parking, free parking in a city center hotel is always a bonus!
A tip would be to book direct with the hotel, we booked through their website rather than any of the discount sites, the room was cheaper with more options offered.

Great location in Tombland, close to the cathedral. Real Plus points were excellent taster meal and wine flight in the restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the service in the restaurant was very good. Great choice of wines too. Old building so not the easiest to navigate, but that's what you should expect from something of its age. The room was comfortable - we found our bedding ok and good tea and coffee facilities. Wifi worked. On the downside, the modern room (and indeed the general decor) is what I'd describe as a little drab - too many shades of brown for my liking. The bathroom needed modernising, though there was plentiful loo roll (which is always a good point). View over the back of the hotel was dire though. Not sure what you could do about this really, but be aware. Mould around the bathroom wall and ceiling because extraction was poor. We kept the bathroom window open to compensate but as others have said, noise from the kitchen extractor fans is quite loud. Didn't worry me too much but it might others. We had drinks in the bar after our meal and found the 10 pound single shot of brandy to be ridiculously expensive. We don't pay that in London.
Overall, the package we booked for 189 was good value. Room and breakfast (which was fine, nice tomatoes!) plus the taster menu and wine. Would return but would want to get a good deal on the room.

Dear Lexicles1,

Thank you for your lovely review in relation to your recent stay with us. We are delighted to see that you enjoyed your time with us and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

We were however disappointed to read some aspects of your stay were not great and we would appreciate it if you could contact our operations manager Dan Hawkie on operations@maidsheadhotel so we can investigate the details about the room inparticular.

We are currently working our way through a refurbishment plan at the hotel and this includes decorating of bedrooms etc.

We also aim to give our guests the best possible food and drink products available and our Hennessey XO is indeed £10 per shot but we do have cheaper options available.

Once again thanks for your review and we hope to hear back from you soon to investigate your points rasied. We would also greatly appreciate it if you could also share your review on the winepress@wensum review page which is specifically for our restaurant reviews.
