On arrival was surprised to see the front of the hotel was covered in scaffolding, not a great start. However, reception staff on check in were friendly and welcoming. We had a special rate which meant we were given a room upgrade; if this was the upgrade I hate to think what a standard room would have been like! The room was very tired looking and the bedside cabinet drawer wouldn't close (something a previous guest has mentioned on TA) and there was scaffolding and workmen outside the room, who could see into the room. We requested a change of room, which we were given. This room was better but, again, curtains and carpets were tired looking and old. Also the bathroom window lock was broken so we couldn't close the window and, as the weather had turned very cool, did not make for a happy bathing experience!
The breakfast was enjoyable.
We were out of our room from 9am to 2pm but on our return the room still hadn't been made up - not a good reflection of the housekeeping.
Despite having booked and paid for a 2 night stay, we decided to check out a day early but staff on reception were totally disinterested as to why we were leaving. We would have expected someone to wonder why we would forfeit the cost of a night's stay by leaving early or, at least, to ask how we had enjoyed our stay.
Only good things about the hotel were the location, which is very central, and the free parking. Definitely not a 4* hotel and we would not recommend.

This is a good quality hotel with excellent staff, good food, comfy beds, well appointed rooms,
lovely atmosphere. The appearance is a bit off putting with scaffolding outside.
Did not put us off and we will return later in the year. Thank you

Room Tip: We were at the back with a good view of Norwich Cathedral.

Dear Linda H

Thank you for taking the time to write your kind comments on Trip Advisor, we were pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay.

We are currently completing essential repairs to the 1900's facade of the building and redecorating the front of the hotel, this work is due to be completed by the end of September but it is critical that we complete these works before the winter sets in, I apologise if the scaffolding has caused any problems.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Maids Head Hotel in the future.

Kind regards

This hotel has a very imposing frontage, although, at the time of our visit, there was repair/refurbishment being done on the roof. This meant that you had to weave between the scaffolding poles to enter the premises by the front entrance.

Once inside, the reception area was welcoming and clean. We were allocated a room on the fourth floor, but, luckily there was a lift. However, there were also steps up to reach the lift. There were steps to access the rear of the hotel, steps to get to the car park and steps to get to the toilets, should you decide to pop into the (well-stocked) bar for a nightcap.

The room was clean, as was the en-suite bathroom. Once the window was opened, the noise from the air-conditioning unit was very loud. Luckily there was an electric fan in the room and this became the most important piece of equipment provided, as it was necessary to keep the window closed at bedtime, due to the noise from the air-con. The room doors were very heavy and the early departure of some guests ensured we were awake in time for breakfast.

The staff were pleasant and helpful and there was a good supply of tourist information available.

Just one more negative, there was a notice in reception with a spelling error in it. Despite this being brought to the attention of a member of staff, this was not removed and replaced.

Room Tip: Try and get a room at the front of the hotel. Hopefully, this should give you a better chance of a...

Dear Joan4327

Thank you for your comments, we are currently carrying out essential repairs to the 1900's Tudor Facade of the building and to protect this facade whilst the works are being carried out we have needed to use extensive scaffolding. The works are due to be completed at the end of September.

Due to the age of the building there are steps throughout the hotel and we try to ensure all information states this and we also try to accommodate our visitors who find steps difficult to the most appropriate rooms. I am sorry to hear that the fans caused you problems and I will ask out contractors to check if they can become quieter.

Kind regards

The Maids (sic) Head hotel is only a 10 minute walk from station or £5 by taxi. It is directly opposite an entrance to the Church of England Cathedral (there is also a Roman Catholic one, so don't get confused if walking and asking for directions). It is also near to many many attractions, so tourists to the charming City of Norwich could not be better placed.

Check in was handled by the very efficient, friendly and helpful reception staff. My room was cold when I arrived on a very wet Tuesday afternoon. It was only the beginning of September so the central heating had yet to be turned on. No sooner had I mentioned the temperature when the staff arranged an individual electric heater to be delivered.

The room, though compact, was beautifully appointed. It had an incredibly comfortable bed and I had one of the best night's sleep ever. It also had a well lit desk and free internet access, so would be perfect for working visitors. The room had tea/coffee making facilities, an iron and board and a large flat screen TV. There was a good sized en suite bathroom with nice toiletries and lovely, fluffy towels.

My room was on the third floor and the building is incredibly old - even with its own resident ghost! Of more immediate concern than any apparition, though, it has lots of little stairs to go up and down, despite there also being a lift. So anyone with a mobility problem may wish to ask for a room that definitely has no stairs to climb. I assume that they must exist.

The breakfast comprised a very good choice of hot and cold dishes from a buffet, as well as the provision of dishes to order, such as kippers. A mark of good quality for me was the provision of wholemeal/artisan bread as well as single portions of marmite - The Maids Head passed both these tests!

At £66 a night bed and breakfast, I would recommend this hotel most highly.

Room Tip: If you have a mobility problem, make sure that there are no little stair cases to climb.

I am staying here again on business. I've had a different room each time and they are so different. On the front this time-such a shame scaffolding obscuring the cathedral but work has to be done. Room is massive and really comfortable. Was cold last nit with unpredictable weaker here but heating now on and room is toasty. Three weeks ago I was using the fan in the wardrobe!! Breakfast is to die for! Huge help yourself buffet with all you could wish for with very pleasant staff. And as ever the free parking all day is much appreciated.

I just had to write a trip advisor about how amazing my experience was here. And that was hands down thanks to the staff! Richard and I think Matthew? We're fantastic! I cannot rate them any higher. They are an asset to that hotel. You must ask for them when you stay. The ultimate guest experience.

As 2nd choice this was a good experience which was conveniently located for Tombland and Elm Hill areas with many bars and restaurants for all, and only a short walk to the City Centre. Car Park not the easiest to locate from some directions, but once parked up we enjoyed a friendly and comfortable stay. Weather was hot and there was a fan to help matters but not quite the same effect as air-conditioning, that would be the only drawback, but the establishment is an older building. The breakfast was very good with a wide choice of well cooked hot and also cold options from a self service arrangement that should satisfy the hungriest of individuals. The small bar area at the rear of the restaurant had some local ales that were most welcome in the late evening following a trip to the theatre. Would happily re-book if requiring to stay in Norwich.

Dear Ray p

Thank you for you comments, we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay, we are looking at adding air conditioning into some rooms early next year but it is quite difficult in such an old building. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future and I hope you will make us your 1st choice this time.
