“Fresh food and good prices”
Reviewed April 12, 2013

We went for a last minute carvery on Thursday night. We were seated within minutes and more or less straight up to the carvery. All 5 of us enjoyed our food it was all fresh and the meat server seem friendly enough. My fiance did whisper to me that he was never asked if he would like a large and apparently if you aren't asked then you get one free! But we never mentioned anything as we didn't know if this was true.
Only negative point was the waitress took a while to take our plates and is wasn't busy. The desserts were tasty the waitress asked if we had any vouchers but due to the last minute choice of eating here we did not. We chose the pound off discounted weekday desserts ans had an over all great meal in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
At the end we waited a while for the waitress to give is the bill so in the end one of us went to the till and paid there.
Perfect for quick meals and great family atmosphere.

“Great Place”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We as a family have used the Toby in Middlesbrough quite a lot and will continue doing so when the food is so good.Friendly staff are always helpful,I always ask for plain cauliflower as I don't like cheesey sauce and you never get turned down they always bring a bowl of steaming cauliflower to the table for you.My grandaughters love going there for a meal and especially love the fill-up soft drinks machine which is great value. One of the reasons I don't mind going for hospital appointments is the Toby is just over the road so You can pop in for breakfast, dinner, tea or just for a sandwich and a coffee!!GREAT!!

“GOOD THE BAD THE UGLY”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

We called for a meal the other day for the first time, the good was the choice and quality of the carvery, nice ingredients, lovely meats, the veg was also very GOOD,and nice setting.the BAD was the starter i had it was a prawn cocktail,im glad it said this on the menu as i would never have guessed,it was the worst i have ever seen never mind tasted.it was in a tall stem like glass, the lettuce was brown at the edges, the prawns were hard not juicy not fresh.there was hardly any marie sauce on them, and the brown bread at the bottom of the glass was stale,i did not eat a bit of it.the mens toilet was UGLY.it stank to high heavens, the toilet seat was loose, god know what germs were lurking in there.safe to say dont think ill be rushing back to the toby carvery.it was my birthday and my daughter was in james cook hospital after having a premature baby,so wanted it to be nice but left disapointed.

“Good Food, Good Service, Excellent Value for Money”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

6 of us went to the Toby in Middlesbrough as we had an offer £12.50 for 2 for 2 courses! So, 4 adults and 2 teenagers ate(including drinks) for just over £50!! Choice was either starter and main or main and desert, adults had a very tasty soup, kids chose the ice cream. Carvery was good, 4 choices of meat with a friendly, chatty chef, veg etc. was good and fresh unlike some other carvery's that look like it's been sat under heated lighting for 2 weeks. Waitress was very personable and chatty and checked foods as one of our teenagers has a nut-allergy. Place was busy but at these prices you'd expect it to be. Only let down if I am being really picky? Two blokes stood at the enterance puffing away on cigarettes which stank as we walked out. Last thing I wanted to smell after such a nice meal. My advice to the management would stop people from smoking so close to the enterance, not a fault on the pub just selfish smokers should have more courtesy (or ban all together in an ideal world!). Overall, 5 stars for quality of food and value for money. Excellent!!
