The ambiance was just incredible. Candlelit, great wine and cheese bar. Just loved everything about it!

This is a wonderful place to have wine. The selection is from a very wide range of reds, whites, and rosés, as well as a fair selection of port (prices are also at a wide range). There is also a nice selection of food to accompany the wine (cheeses, cured meats, etc.). If you get there early enough, you'll find a seat inside (in the cellar), or if it's a warm summer's day, sitting outside in the little alleyway is very pleasant.

Gordon's Wine Bar has been a classic for Londoners in the know forever. It is sited in Kipling House at the west side of the street by Embankment Tube station next to the Embankment park. It is in the basement of the same building where Kipling wrote his first novel. Although they have a parkside setting outside, their basement seating, in a candlelit underground setting is unique and wonderful. You can buy numerous cheeses and bread and butter, or salads or some other food, but the wine, sherry and ports are the premium products here. No ales or beer. The establishments popularity makes it a crowded environment at times and pickpockets work in the area, which the restaurant is proactive in trying to protect its clients, but keep your guard up.

I read about this plan while planning a trip to london. I knew right away that I had to check it out because of it's atmosphere and history. It's a very old wine bar, and it's architecture shows it off in the most positive way. You basicly walk in, order your drinks, purchase your food, and then find a table. This place fills up rather quickly so be smart about this process. I would suggest one person grabs a table while somebody else grabs drinks and food. It's next to the embankement tube station so it's very easy to get to.

You can get a cheese platter with bread and two big chunks of cheese for 9.50 euros or one piece of cheese for 5.00. I got two thinking I can finish it all.. Not smart on my part because it's alot for one person.

The tight quarters can be a turn off for some people but it's nice. They have lots of good food to munch on besides cheese. My better half loved the wine selection, and even didn't mind the many people inside.

I would highly suggest this place to anyone visiting london who enjoys some night life, wine, and tasty food.

This place doesn't take reservations so account for that.

Just up from embankment tube station is the delightful Gordon’s wine bar, unassuming on the outside but yet a favourite of many in London and beyond. Ample outside, covered, seating space and indoor seating, a third of the bar is made up of the underground cellar, low sealing and lit by candles in wine bottles it presents a terrific atmosphere, as though one has stepped back in time.

The ‘old cellar’, cage like, may be booked online for up to 10 people, 8 is comfortable, (advised months in advance as it’s popular) for an afternoon slot until 4pm and an evening slot 4:15pm until closing for a slightly more private party. The cellar can get quite hot even in the winter, but its fun to sup below the busy London streets and hear the tube rumble by candlelight.

Their very helpful website answers most questions and states that if there is no room at the inn, so to speak,, then just ask to share a table and friendly customers will shift up: this has been true in my experience.

The extensive wine list is admirable with champagne and sparkling wines, red's, white’s, rosés and fortified and desert wines: Gordon’s is a WINE BAR there is no beer and no spirits, no fizzy pop, water an orange juice for the non wine folk.

The food is excellent: a Bbq grill outside, hot food, Sunday roasts and a wide selection of charcuterie and cheeses. Thoroughly recommend the Isle of Avalon - the best cheese in the house.

A great place for a drink after work or with a party of friends. Excellent for a couple.
