“Basic hotel, well-located, helpful staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

We had stayed some years ago at St. Margaret's Hotel nearby, the previous one run by the owners of the Celtic Hotel. This time we opted for a room with ensuite bath, which was carved out in the corner of what was once an elegant room (perhaps a parlor?) in this row house. Like a number of other hotels in Bloomsbury, the Celtic is made up of several former elegant row houses that have been joined together. Our room was adequate in size for two of us, though definitely on the small size, and the bed was comfy. Storage was good for our 4-night stay, with a wardrobe and chest of drawers so we could unpack. Bathroom amenities were very minimal--a couple of tiny unwrapped bars of soap for two people, no shampoo, small bath towels, etc. The price was good for this part of London, though certainly high by our standards--just don't expect high-end amenities, or even anything approaching a budget chain in the US. We regularly seek out and use small hotels such as this when we travel in Europe, so knew what to expect.

As others have noted, the staff were very helpful and accommodating, both at the front desk and in the nicely-appointed breakfast room. There were two public lounges with a large flat-screen TV in one. Several times, we saw groups or classes being conducted in one of the lounges, so other guests would of course feel they needed to use the other one. There was wi-fi available for free, but the connectivity was poor in our room (which was just up one flight), so I would go to the lounge to check email, etc.

The location was excellent, close to British Museum, restaurants, etc. We walked further afield too, e.g., Leicester Square, St. Martin's in the Fields, Churchill War Rooms, Houses of Parliament, etc. It's right by the Russell Square tube stop, and walking distance to Paddington Station. We did, however, take a taxi to Paddington as we were catching an early Eurostar train to Brussels. As there is another larger hotel across the street, and a number of others nearby, taxis seemed to be readily available in the neighborhood. We had fun going to the pub that's right on back of the hotel, including one one night when we were packed in with hordes of football fans when England was playing a round of the 2012 Euro soccer championships.

Room Tip: Front rooms are a bit noisy, especially with early morning street cleaning and trash pick up.

Stayed at the Celtic Hotel - very good location - just around the corner from the Russel Square Tube stop. Very close to the British Museum and the British library. The room was clean and we opted to have our own shower and bathroom rather than share. Just a bit more expensive but well worth it for us. Need to be able to walk up stairs as I don't believe they have an elevator. The breakfast was very nice - full English breakfast also cereal and other choices. Considering the cost of staying in London, we think this was a great value. We left the hotel to go to Heathrow and found it pretty convenient to get to paddington and get the Heathrow Express (one change on the tube),

By American standards 100 pounds or $160 a night the price is outrageous By British standards the price appeared to be quite normal, even inexpensive for Central London. The room was small, the en suite bathroom was tiny. My husband complained that he could not sit on the toilet without his knees hitting the wall. However, this appears to be normal for Europe. The staff were courteous and helpful, the breakfasts excellent (scrambled eggs not the best) and be prepared to climb four flights of stairs, there were no elevators. The location was excellent. it was right on The Piccadilly line, Londons most used line for central London.

Really a perfect location to get to from the airport, close to a convenient subway stop. Restaurants around, nice area to walk in, not expensive.

I got a room with no WC or shower, but the WC was very convenient and the showers nice and clean.

The people were nice and helpful. I needed to get online and sort out some travel problems after I checked out and they kindly let me hang around in one of the living rooms for HOURS.

The only thing I don't like is that you have to send your credit card details by email or read them over the phone to hold a room. It makes me nervous to do that with all the credit card info theft going on. They need to get a proper secured on-line payment system.

We loved our stay at the Celtic. Of course the location is fantastic as so many have said before. Let me add, though, that this is the easiest transfer ever for tired international travelers. From Heathrow, we slogged onto the tube (the less expensive non-express train) and arrived at Russell Square with no fuss or hassles. Out of the station, you go left, and left again at the corner and you're there!

Yes, the carpets in the hallway are very worn-- and none of the furniture matches-- but this is part of the B&B experience. We were at the back of the building (I think most rooms are) and it was super quiet at night. Fresh air out the window. Decent sized room. Lots of hot water and a good shower. Everything is old, but very very clean.

The breakfast was big and made even better by the smiling, friendly, efficient women who serve the guests. Fantastic. This is a small and friendly operation all around and I recommend it-- and actually already have a reservation to return in September!!

Bloomsbury is an expensive area to lodge in, but we enjoyed the convenient location on fairly quiet Guilford St. just a block from the Russell Square Underground station. The room was clean and comfortable, and the window could be opened. It contained a wash basin and a shower, but the shared toilet was in the hall above. The cost was 85 pounds including a very full and tasty English breakfast prepared and served by friendly helpers. All the staff including the owner were very friendly and helpful. Our only problem was that wi-fi service for our laptop was rather sporadic even in the spacious Lounges. We look forward to staying there again on our next trip to London.

We needed a room for 1 night before flying home out of Heathrow. I wanted to be within walking distance of the British Museum so the Celtic Hotel worked well for us. It is an older hotel without an elevator and was filled with a very pleasant group of college students from the States. The price is right. Very generous English breakfast and great service from the front desk staff. We liked it very much. Room was spacious and bathroom good. Not far from Theater district in a very pleasant area with parks.
