Description: Chamberlain's Restaurant in historic Leadenhall Market has been described as 'perfect fish in the heart of the city'. With our own wholesale fish business Chamberlain and Thelwell, established at Billingsgate in 1947 to supply the best restaurants and hotels in London. Today we serve top quality fish to a number of loyal clients. The restaurant extends over three floors that look out onto the stunning Leadenhall Market with a ground floor restaurant, intimate mezzanine, slightly more formal first floor restaurant, brasserie and basement bar with its original brickwork, high vaulted ceilings and an outside terrace which in warm weather is one of London's favourite places. Chamberlain's is available for private hire and offer complete flexibility- from relaxed intimate dining, formal luncheons, presentations or lively parties with music. The unique layout of the restaurant means we can cater for a small private party of 12 on their own floor to a party of 150 using the whole restaurant.

An expensive restaurant - make sure you are with someone else who is prepared to pay eg main course of wild sea bass was something like £28, starters around £12 - but the food was good. It was masterchef style- looked really nice, but not too much on the plate ! Went on Wed afternoon when there were a number of city suits eating there- not a buzzing atmosphere, but maybe the prices keep the buzzing people away ! service was fine.

“Overpriced for the quality of food and no atmosphere”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

I visited this restaurant on a Tuesday night and it was dead quiet, only one other table was there. While we were there, we saw many people looking at the menu outside and then deciding to move away. This is no surprise as Chamberlain's is really expensive for what it offers. The dishes we had were between average and good, nothing special, no creativity or amazing taste that will stay memorable. There are many other fish restaurants in London that offer better quality fish for a quarter of the price and actually have some atmosphere. This was my 2nd visit in Chamberlain's - the other time was on a Friday evening and, again, it was dead. I don't think I'll be going back there, not unless they drastically reduce their prices.

“Very average”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013 via mobile

Maybe it was because it was Tuesday night, but it was quiet.... Three tables of two. Food was ok given the price and my sole was slightly undercooked. The waiter managed to tip wine over my partner when he was clearing the plates, but no napkins were rushed out, instead, it took a few minutes for the head waiter to come over to assess the damage.... Compensation was another glass of wine each which was nice, but to be honest, we were dying to leave and would have preferred the offer of taking the service off or wine off. There are much better places in London for fish given the price being charged and the bread was slightly stale which is never a good sign!!

“If someone else is paying”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

Had a business lunch here

Smoked salmon starter and fish main were very pleasant indeed.

Sat in the brasserie. The atmoshpere was dead - maybe as the weather was nice?

Service was OK. The bunch of stooges upstairs were not too helpful though.

Prices were steep.

Good experience but would only return if someone else was paying.

“Bit of a mixed catch”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2013

Always wanted to visit Leadenhall Market, a Victorian enclave in the banking centre, so as we were passing through decided we'd stay for food at Chamberlain's.

Had a quick look at the brasserie, which is located in the basement down a few flights of stairs, but this felt a bit poky so returned to the main restaurant upstairs which is more airy and means you can look out to the fine décor of the market.

My wife and I had the same starter, Hand Dived Scallop garnished with boiled homemade Darjeeling tea smoked bacon, fresh peas & baby fennel, which was great with plenty of flavour.

For mains I had the Grilled Fillet of Sea Bream, garnished with summer vegetable bouillon & mousseline potato; pleasant enough but the bouillon was very watery rather defeating the object of catching the Bream and getting it out the water in the first place.

My wife had Chamberlain’s Cod & Chips with mushy peas & homemade tartare sauce. As she pressed her knife on the distressed looking batter the oil oozed out. This was pointed out to the waitress who said the chef would cook a new 'dryer' version. A new plate of fish and chips returned (I'd finished by then) but it still didn't look great. To be honest it look liked the fish and chips you get in a motorway service station and, had I been served it in such an establishment, I'd have thought to myself "well what do I expect for £8 up a motorway?". However this fish and chips was £20.50 for the small version (another £7.50 to get a decent portion) and a pale imitation of the dish served at Sea Pebbles, my local chippy in Hatch End. My wife asked for ketchup but the brown murky looking stuff that arrived had an astringent effect probably best reserved for cleaning the saucepans.

Two starters, two mains, no deserts, one glass of wine and a bottle of still water all added up to a hefty £100, all served by a sour faced looking waitress who gave the impression she was there under duress.

Chamberlain's isn't terrible but for the price and location it was disappointing. Just be careful what you order and as you wander through the market and say "fancy a snack?" get the airbag ready for your wallet.
