A former car showroom on Piccadilly, serves every meal you could want, breakfast, brunch, lunch, high tea, dinner. I f booked you could stay and graze from one meal to the next. Very god service, refined atmosphere but equally relaxed. Stephen Fry (National Treasure) was on the adjoining table, and James Bond II (Sir Roger Moore) two tables down. Very good for whichever traditional English meal you have.

Just back from a mini-break in London with my lovely hubby. Afternoon Tea was a must and we decided to opt for the Ritz. However on arriving at the world famous hotel we were informed that we could not book in for afternoon tea as my hubby was wearing jeans and I wore trainers (vital if you are walking the streets of London!). Undeterred we walked around the corner and found The Wolseley. This looked very posh and we were sure that our dress would again be inappropriate but we tried anyway. The staff were lovely and made us feel right at home. No mention was made of our attire or my trainers and within five minutes we were shown to our table right at the window with perfect views of the cake stands! We ordered 2 afternoon teas and quickly finished the sandwiches but there were still 4 scones (with clotted cream and home-made jam) plus 6 delectable cakes to get through so no worries. Nonetheless our waiters asked us if we wanted more sandwiches so hubby could not refuse. Even he could not complete the extra sandwiches which is almost unheard of! Extra water was provided for our teapots too. We were given linen table napkins, solid silver cutlery and service that could not have been any better at the Ritz itself - their loss don't you think?! So next time you think of going to the Ritz for tea, walk around the corner and chose the equally stylish, but much more welcoming Wolseley instead.

Good atmosphere, busy in there but waiters were everywhere, always got one when you needed one but not intrusive at all. Had a 6pm dinner, and all the food was good quality and well cooked, nicely presented and exactly what was on the menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner to celebrate a birthday. Would recommend for a nice dinner out. Spotted 2 celebrities too! Would recommend.

I've always loved the Wolseley for its great location and high quality comfort food. I use it to meet people coming from the West when I've been in the City - and also as an upmarket pre-match place for trips to Wembley (it's right by the Jubilee line). They do basics really well in a bustling and busy atmosphere - the menu is not over-engineered or fussy - staples like steak, the Wiener Schnitzel and a great burger all go down a treat. Not for a sophisticated or romantic meal but one of my faves.

Service was attentive. Unlike some high-end tea places you were offered a second pot of tea rather than having to ask for a refill of the old tea leaves. The food was good and fresh, the scones were a highlight. We were aware that the tables were being turned, but we were ready to leave just before our two hours slot was up anyway. A very pleasant afternoon, in pleasant surroundings.
