Description: Skylon takes its name from the original, iconic structure that was built for the 1951 Festival of Britain and the restaurant's design echoes the style of the Royal Festival Hall during the same period. Situated on the third floor of the Southbank Centre, Skylon boasts outstanding views over the River Thames from its huge floor-to-ceiling windows. The main Restaurant features modern British cuisine, while the Grill offers more informal cooking and a relaxed atmosphere. The two dining areas are separated by a stunning centrepiece, raised bar which is renowned across London for its fabulous cocktails. Executive Head Chef Tom Cook brings a wealth of experience to the kitchen, following time at sister restaurant Pont de la Tour. Look out for regularly changing menus with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients combined simply and imaginatively. Visit the Skylon website for sample menus and further information.

We booked a pre-theatre dinner in the Skylon on the internet and noticed that it was offering a three course mean and a glass of champers for a mere £30 a head... "Why not?" we thought but did wonder afterwards if it was the right choice... would we, as the cheepos, be shuffled out of sight and quietly forgotten about?

When we arrived the staff were welcoming, courteous, professional and very efficiently stored away our outside coats and showed us to an excellent table by the window. We had superb views over the river towards Big Ben..

The £30 menu was limited but the smoked salmon crevice was beautifully presented and really excellent. We both had lamb... it was skillfuly cooked, very tasty and the Madeira sauce was delivered with a flourish and panache that we've not seen since cloched service went out of fashion. Desert was delicious and the sweets with the coffee were really exceptionally tasty...especially a little orange jelly.

Wines were a bit on the expensive side... as the very full wine list had very few less expensive bottles.

It can happen in the best of establishments... a tiny piece of catering film had not been removed from one of the servings of lamb. What could have been annoying was handled utterly professionally. The assistant manager apologised, promptly replaced both meals, made an accommodation on the bill, and made sure that we were very well looked after for the remainder of the meal. We even had a fulsome apology from the chef. It was far more than was necessary...

The ambience is very upmarket city bustle. Staff move around as if they are on a mission but are efficient and professionally pleasant when they are serving at a table. We were really impressed and had no fear that we would have to rush to the performance that we had booked.

On the basis that we experienced excellent service, the Skylon had a real sense of place, the food was delicious and the ambience well suited to the venue and the area... The Skylon is a definite Excellent.

We liked best the attentive, efficient professional service.

We liked least the fact that there were very few less expensive wines available.

Top Tip: best not to arrive with too many expectations and then the entire dining experience may be much more enjoyable.

Great luncheon with a 3pm table enjoying great atmosphere and early evening setting. Dinner was sold out so was very impressed we could come for a very late lunch!

We were celebrating 2 birthdays and a token gift was brought to the table. We were never rushed and had a very enjoyable evening. It was busy and shift may have changed but I can't fault them.

This was my second time and it was much better later in the day. Having a window table also makes a BIG difference which i was fortunate for on both occasions.

Definitely will be back for special treat!

We hadn't planned on visiting Skylon but were walking around looking for somewhere nice for a drink, and arrived at the Southbank Centre. It's one of those delights that can't be planned! The restaurant is stunning with equally stunning views (at night). The atmosphere is great considering the high ceilings - the acoustics don't suffer. We were immediately seated even though we didn't have a booking. The cocktail menu is extensive so it was hard to choose, but I settled on an "Aviation" which was delicious. We were all served iced water without asking and some nibbles. I could have easily sat there for a few hours! I want to go back and next time eat the food as I have heard very good things.

Pre-Christmas the atmosphere here was really lovely and having a table alongside the window facing the decorations and lighting along the embankment was a real bonus.
The staff here are always very attentive and the food and service are excellent.
It is always a pleassure to return to this place.

It is located just by the river at the 3rd level of The Royal Festival Hall. I think the restaurant is very well planned, there are tables close to each other but there are also tables with quite a bit space between. The service is indeed very good. The lunch menu is reasonably well priced. (25 pounds for 2, 29 pounds for 3 courses) We have tried meat and fish dishes and share them among ourselves. Fish dishes are better in that there are more choices and prepared in different ways from roasting to pan searing. Starters can be improved upon. The chef is surely paying attention to the food styling as the dishes are very often represented with colorful additions. The desserts are good as well. Wine list is good and reasonably well priced. Expect to pay 70-80 USD for a 3 course meal including wine and service. Well recommended.
