We booked a pre-theatre dinner in the Skylon on the internet and noticed that it was offering a three course mean and a glass of champers for a mere £30 a head... "Why not?" we thought but did wonder afterwards if it was the right choice... would we, as the cheepos, be shuffled out of sight and quietly forgotten about?
When we arrived the staff were welcoming, courteous, professional and very efficiently stored away our outside coats and showed us to an excellent table by the window. We had superb views over the river towards Big Ben..
The £30 menu was limited but the smoked salmon crevice was beautifully presented and really excellent. We both had lamb... it was skillfuly cooked, very tasty and the Madeira sauce was delivered with a flourish and panache that we've not seen since cloched service went out of fashion. Desert was delicious and the sweets with the coffee were really exceptionally tasty...especially a little orange jelly.
Wines were a bit on the expensive side... as the very full wine list had very few less expensive bottles.
It can happen in the best of establishments... a tiny piece of catering film had not been removed from one of the servings of lamb. What could have been annoying was handled utterly professionally. The assistant manager apologised, promptly replaced both meals, made an accommodation on the bill, and made sure that we were very well looked after for the remainder of the meal. We even had a fulsome apology from the chef. It was far more than was necessary...
The ambience is very upmarket city bustle. Staff move around as if they are on a mission but are efficient and professionally pleasant when they are serving at a table. We were really impressed and had no fear that we would have to rush to the performance that we had booked.
On the basis that we experienced excellent service, the Skylon had a real sense of place, the food was delicious and the ambience well suited to the venue and the area... The Skylon is a definite Excellent.
We liked best the attentive, efficient professional service.
We liked least the fact that there were very few less expensive wines available.
Top Tip: best not to arrive with too many expectations and then the entire dining experience may be much more enjoyable.
