Comfortable, unpretentious pub with a nice restaurant; good selection of food, mostly British, served by friendly efficient staff.

The Vintry is smack in the middle of the City and you could be forgiven for expecting it to be full of boorish stereotypes, but in fact it's very nice, both as a watering hole and a restaurant. Lovely open restaurant area with eccentric mismatched wooden tables and chairs, complemented by flawless glassware and nice linens. Staff are attentive without being overbearing. Food arrived very quickly, which is a plus when you're just stopping in for a quick lunch, as we were.

I had pork fillet with Serrano ham and basil, served with purple sprouting broccoli and mash, my friend chose the swordfish with peppers. Both were extremely competent - the pork fillet in particular was melt in the mouth, the accompanying jus entirely divine and the basil surprisingly punchy. Minor complaint that my extra veg were closer to raw than al dente, but otherwise all very good indeed. Will be back to sample the starters and desserts!

Starter of mackerel pate excellent. Sea bass decently proportioned and flavoursome. £50 per head incl half a bottle of Pouilly Fume good value for the City.
