An excellent Sipsmiths G&T at the bar then to table for dinner. Colchester Oysters were as good as any oysters I've ever eaten. And the Turbot to follow, whilst pricey at £49, was excellent. Top quality cheese board, a reasonably priced Bandol, and then a Batailley Paulliac 2006 with a ridiculous mark up, available by the case on line for around £30-35 a bottle, Wiltons charged £150 ! I cannot fault the quality, but boy, it costs. All in over £500 for two. Mind you, on the next table were Una Stubbs and Julia McKenzie, it's good to dine with the stars !

Dear DickSands,
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit. We have noted comments with regard to our wine list and pricing structure which incidentally we have been reviewing.
We are very pleased with our newly refurbished oyster Bar is a great spot to have a drink before dinner or even just to stop by and have drink and some Colchester Oysters!
We have recently introduced a wide variety of options at varying costs on the menu which are, of course, all up to Wiltons’ standards – the choice is yours!
We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit.
Yours sincerely,
Alison McLennan

My annual blow-out at Wiltons.

Service excellent as always, and with the option of dining solo at the bar, it's nice to see what's going on. Wiltons does cater well for solo diners, but I prefer not to have a table to myself.

A discussion on the merits of the various smoked salmon resulted in a sample of each which would have constituted a portion elsewhere. I went for the Foremans London cure wild which was excellent.

Dover sole, crumble and cheese to follow. A G&T, two glasses of Sancerre, a port and a bottle of water. £174 including tip. Not cheap, but still value for money.

Why only four stars? The suggested scoop of ice-cream with the crumble. £2.50. Disgraceful. The clientele are clearly well funded, but there's a limit.

Dear David S,
Thank you for taking the time to write your review and we are particularly pleased that you appreciated the various smoked salmon and oysters we offer that appeal to different tastes.
Dining at the bar is a fun and comfortable experience. Like you, some of our guests prefer sitting at the counter or others like to sit at a table opposite. Either way, the bar area is a great spot to soak in the atmosphere and watch the comings and goings.
Please visit us again soon.
Kind regards,
Alison McLennan

Lunch menu of the day was perfect, good choice of simply prepared fresh food,
not too much and not too expensive.

If you appreciate the highest possible standards of traditional English cuisine with irreproachable professional service, then Wiltons will be for you, as it is for me, simply the best restaurant in Europe.

It is some years since we last ate here and were delighted to find that nothing has changed; the ambience remains essentially English – comfortable and relaxed yet with a commendable insistence on a degree of formality; the same patrician milieu prevails with little evidence of bad manners or ostentatious behaviour from one’s fellow diners – it is truly a gentlemen’s watering hole as it always has been. Nor, I am pleased to say, does the menu pay too much deference to modern concepts of “light” and “healthy” food; you may, of course, eat salads and margarine on your bread if you wish, but you can also eat glorious potted shrimps, served warm or cold according to your taste, perfectly cooked roast beef from the trolley (Wednesdays), lambs’ kidneys and bacon and other superb traditional dishes sadly driven off so many modern menus by the health police.

The seafood at Wiltons is of the highest standard available. Superb Oysters (choice of three sorts), the best and juiciest Dover Sole in London cooked in whatever way you wish (£48), Halibut, Wild Turbot or Sea Bass and a Native Lobster Cocktail (£28) which is to die for.

Perfection does not come cheaply, of course, but one can still eat fairly modestly on days when one does not wish, or cannot afford, to immerse oneself in the rapture of the à la carte menu; there is a very good set lunch menu (£30 for 2 courses, £38 for 3) offering a choice of three dishes for each course. The Wine List, naturally, is constructed with love and finesse to complement the peerless cuisine. Everything at Wiltons is as perfect as it comes; I know of no better restaurant in Europe.

Faultless kitchen; oysters, Brill, mixed grill-perfectly prepared & very fresh.
The set menu is outstanding value.
Beautiful restaurant.
Well worth the visit.
Service was also very attentive but a touch pushy.
The house champagne lets it down a little. The other wines by the glass were excellent.
