“best sushi i ever had in london”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Best dishes of the night: grilled eel, seared toro, aubergine sushi, scallop. Very, very high quality fish. Interesting 'modern sushis' such as eel and caviar.

The table next to us had a chef selection sashimi which looked really tempting, will try next time.

Bill added up to 150 per head.

The only downside is the cocktail. I know it's mostly my bad (why would I order cocktail in a japanese place) but the wasabi mary (I was trying to be adventurous..) was frankly the worst drink I ever tasted for a long time. Hence only 4 stars.

“Too Expensive”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

My husband and I have been to all the great Japanese restaurants in London and although the food is very good it is way too over priced! I've never seen prices like it.

“Probably the best Kaiseki food in London”
Reviewed December 24, 2013

Yes, Umu is very expensive and the clientelle are either well heeled or on expense accounts, but the food quality and presentation are both exceptional. We have entertained clients on several occasions and chosen from the a la carte and the tasting menu; neither dissappointed. The kaiseki tasting menu is truly fantastic but at £100 a head, you would expect it to be.

You can get great Japanese food in far less formal surroundings at a quarter of the price, out at Ealing Common, but Umu knocks Zuma into the long grass and is probably better (but different) from Zuma's sister, Roka.

“Extremely good”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

I took three Japanese clients for dinner and Umo certainly impressed them. Apparently this restaurant has one of the best Sake cellars in Europe but having Japanese guests to choose was a bonus. The food as you would expect is immaculately presented. Authentic Japanese food such as charcoal smoked eel is a classic dish in Tokyo, so there was great interest to see how this tasted using eels from Wales - superb. We also had the chefs Sashimi selection, again local fish prepared in Japanese style Cornish Bass was very impressive. Tempura was well made, the only disappointing dish for me was the Tuna Belly, but that's just my personal taste the rest of the table enjoyed it.
The bill was £150pp and we didn't go crazy on the Sake. This place isn't as fashionable as Zuma, Roca or Nobu so if you want celebrities and paparazzi go there, you will spend as much. If you want very good authentic Japanese food then try Umo. Pure class.
