Description: Tucked away in a tiny courtyard at the heart of the City of London, in the historic Sanderman Port Cellars, The Don is an elegant retreat with superb modern art throughout. Famous for its service and style, as well as its stunning wine list, The Don has won a Wine Spectator Award every year since 2000. Listed in the Hardens, Square Meal and Good Food Guides, The Don is recommended for its modern, quality Gallic cuisine accompanied by London's largest selection of ports and sherries. Bright and spacious, the restaurant's interior is highlighted by its stunning double height wine tower and seven large windows that open up on to the small courtyard. For a truly historic atmosphere, you can also wine and dine in the bistro, previously a wine cellar where Port and sherry were bottled for over 200 years. The cosy dining area has retained the authentic thick-vaulted brick walls and ceiling from this era, and along with its small bar, the bistro is an excellent destination for a relaxed lunch or supper with friends and colleagues.

“Disappointed”
Reviewed November 15, 2012 via mobile

First time dining here and after rave recommendations from some colleagues I decided to host lunch for one of my clients. I have to say I was disappointed. It's not the cheapest but not the dearest either I know but you still expect a decent standard of service. My ribeye was cooked to perfection though and mt client was very happy with her choice of Lamb Shank. They were either understaffed or had other diners who were more demanding but I was constantly having to attract their attention.

Probably won't return as there is too much choice of good places to dine in London.

“SLIPPING STANDARDS”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

This used to be one of the best restaurants in the City. Now, sadly, it has lost its way. Service is lacklustre, food deeply unimpressive, and there is a soulless feel to the large upper restaurant. No longer worth a diversion.

“A decent restaurant, especially if someone else is paying”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

If this restaurant were to be removed to Cambridge, that gastronomic Atacama, it would be received as manna from heaven and packed to the gills. However, the City of London has high standards, and prices to match. By comparison with its peers this is a good, but not outstanding place, with well-prepared, conventional food in generous portions. We liked several varieties of lamb, calves liver, particularly good chips and an interestingly varied cheese board. The wine list is exceptional, especially in clarets, but there is nothing much under £50 a bottle and the good stuff is well into three figures. Service is prompt, competent and cheerful. If you are in the area with your oenophile stockbroker and he (or indeed she) is paying, then you will have an enjoyable lunch among City folk. The restaurant does not open at weekends.

“This restaurrant is a standout in any city in the world”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Located in a well hidden alley in the middle of the City, worth finding. Food and service so good my associate and I went there twice in three nights. Great for fish and meat dishes and extensive wine list.

“Private dining”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Ate in the cellar private dining room, where the food was great.

Atmosphere in old cellars is also very good. Staff were very attentive and looked after us.

If I had one criticism, it would be that there was no music!!
