“Just marvellous”

Good for: Romantic, Special occasions, Business meetings
Dining options: Late Night, Lunch, Dinner, Full Bar, Private Dining, Reservations, Seating, Serves Alcohol, Waitstaff
Neighborhood: Mayfair
Description: The first UK restaurant to be awarded one, two, and then three Michelin stars, Le Gavroche remains a class apart. Since opening in 1967, this Mayfair bastion of French cuisine has been very much a family affair, and chef-patron Michel Roux Jr continues the tradition today. The elegance of the menu and the ambience is impeccably tailored, while the discreet service has won its own plaudits.

“Just marvellous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2013

This restaurant is without doubt 'the place to go in London', it cannot be faulted. The food is wonderful, the service impeccable, which results in a marvellous experience.
I have been twice, once for dinner with my son. On that occasion we experienced the 'menu exceptional' with wine, i recall this was about £150 a head but it was a very special treat and takes any concern out of the meal because the Sommelier serves the correct wines with each course (8 if I recollect correctly).
The second occasion I and four friends had lunch, again a great meal made better by a visit by Michel Roux to our table.

What you do need to be aware of is there is a rolling 3 month waiting list for a table! So, if you want a table for the 1st of April you need to phone on the 1st January, not the day before, not the day after. Phone at 9am, any later than that the tables will be gone. You have been warned!

“A lunch to remember”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013

We were so lucky to get a cancellation for lunch and were not disappointed, The restaurant itself was inviting, informal and had a real buzz with a good mix of clientele and not a spare seat in the place. We loved that the staff were young yet clearly knowledgeable and extremely enthusiastic. Service was impeccable with just the right amount of attention so we felt totally relaxed. The meal consisted of beautiful little appetizers, followed by amuse-bouches of lobster tails then starters of rabbit roulade with livers and crispy croutons, and king scallop with cured octopus with cauliflower puree and pickled artichokes, both stunning. Mains were fish stew with new potatoes and saffron, and a ballotine of chicken with polenta cake and a rich jus, again both faultless. For dessert, my partner had the apple tart whilst I went for the (light) option of ice cream and sorbet, which was actually 6 portions of every flavour! Well, what's a girl to do? The meal was finished with coffee and the most gorgeous petit fours. The price of £108 for two included a bottle of water and a very good bottle of wine, superb value for money. And to top it all, the man himself visited each table and was so charming and enigmatic, and a real gentleman. We will definitely be back, and highly recommend a visit.

“Living in the past ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013

I'd consider myself an experienced and competent foodie. You only have to look at the restaurants in which I have eaten. Gavroche is old school & there are better places to eat. We ate 'a l carte' at lunch time. The suckling pig was very tasty, but all the pomp & ceremony, & old fashioned dining room ruins an experience. We were two male friends catching up on old times … why did one of us have a menu with no prices ? Roux may know how to cook, but he does not know how to make a restaurant & enjoyable experience.

“Disappointing and way overpriced”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2013

Went for my birthday and was very excited about eating at a two Michelin star restaurant for the first time What a disappointment.
I have to say the service was impeccable . Efficient , attention to detail , knowledge of the menu , wine paring, brilliant .
The food however was very disappointing. Canapés and amuse Bouche were of Good quality but starter and main were a major let down. Main course especially . Over seasoned , too strong in cumin . Tarragon velouté greyish in colour . Presentation quite basic.
Ouch 240 quid . My partner was not drinking , and I definitely wasn't getting carried away.

“Are you serious?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2013 via mobile

Had a menu exceptionale for lunch today. All I could say is you should go out to France and eat somewhere half serious then you get as good a meal. Rediculous and so sad you have to pay that much in London for what they can offer. Really pitty. Really so.
