We have been regularly to , and enjoyed eating at , La Trompette , since it opened to replace ( good news ) La Dordogne in the Millennium year. And we are fans. As we are of the Glasshouse, its sister restaurant. Rob Weston is a fantastic chef and Chiswick is lucky to have such a restaurant . And so it is a shame that we are loathe to recommend La Trompette to first time visitors. But the service is now poor , the choice of food on the menu is self indulgently limited and the cost has increased along with the smugness of the maitre d' .
And so what was always a very pleasant experience has become less so . Little things highlight this such as the reluctance to accommodate one of our guests' food preferences or the owners' refusal to say on the menu that there is a choice of one or two courses if one does not want all three courses for the set price ( plus supplement in some cases ) . Or having to ask more than once for missing wine glasses . And then on the ( £500 for 6 people ) bill the "optional" service charge is added as a matter of course without reference to it being discretionary or the fact it represents 12,5% of the bill . And this after we spend the whole meal serving our own water and wine.
Consider the excellent Quantus restaurant opposite for half the price where they are delighted to see you rather than expecting you to be delighted to see them or if you want a 5 star experience go to River Café. It is harder to get in than La Trompette but for a reason. It delivers and La Trompette , currently, does not.
