“Lovely surroundings and fab food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2012

We had a lovely Saturday lunch at J Sheekey in London. The weekend menu is great value and the food just as fabulous as the a la carte. The Sheekey fish pie is amazing, full of fish and flavour. A good choice of wine is available too and the service is efficient and attentive but not too over the top. Definitely worth a visit.

“Should look to their laurels.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2012

After a previously very successful visit to this restaurant, we were very disappointed by our meal here this week. What was listed on the menu as "crab bisque", instead of being "a thick, rich soup, made from pureed seafood and cream", (as defined in culinary terms) was thin, watery and virtually flavourless. Scallops in the half shell were still attached to their shells, gritty and thoroughly unpleasant, chips served with my partner's fillet of fish were pallid and dry, whereas those served at an adjacent table looked to be crisp and golden. Was it something we said? Did we not leave a large enough tip last time? As patrons we are often advised to complain at the time, but why spoil an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable evening at the theatre by making critical comments and creating an unpleasant atmosphere at the outset? I would hope that ours was an isolated incident, but we won't be going back!

“Best fish in London”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2012

By far the best fish restaurant in London. It's no surprise as its sister restaurant is the Ivy. Lovely staff and wonderful food within a classic, cosy decor.

“nice appetizers and desserts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2012

Appetizers – oysters and mussels were fresh and delicious. For the mains we ordered cod fillet and a fish stew. There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with the meal, but I expected a symphony of flavours, which actually turned out to be a rather simple performance. Fortunately, the desert made up for any disappointment. Entitled “Golden Pineapple and Mango with sorbet”, it was absolutely perfect. The service was very professional.

“Nice food but overpriced. Check your bill!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 29, 2012

We went to this restaurant for a special treat. The food was very good however it is overpriced for what you get (very small side order of veg is £5!) and beware you will be charged a cover charge AND a service charge!! I would have given this place and overall score of 3 if it hadn't been for us being overcharged for our wine and the pretentious way in which the mistake was dealt with. We ordered a bottle of pinot grigio (£35) which is quite a lot of money for us but we thought special treat why not!! However we were actually given and charged for a bottle of 'Pinot Gris' very similar name but double the price! It was not our mistake as we clearly pointed to the wine when we ordered and we did not get much of a chance to look at the bottle as it was in a cooler behind us for the entire meal. On querying the bill it did not go down well at all and the waiter explained the mix up with the wine names but did not offer an apology. In fact he just stood there and waited for our reaction and I honestly believe he thought we would back down and pay for it!! Thankfully we ended up paying for what we originally ordered but I was made to feel VERY uncomfortable about the whole thing and therefore would not return to J Sheekey again. Shame, but if the staff aren't familiar with the wines they are serving it can end up an expensive mistake for the customers!
