Description: Fish! Restaurant in the heart of Borough market, does what it says - providing the very best fish available in London to hungry customers. Established in 1999, restaurateur Tony Allan had a vision to transform the old 18th century Pea Shelling Warehouse into a fish restaurant. The airy interior encompasses the open kitchen where diners can watch the chefs at work. The restaurant opens out onto a large terrace, which is open all year and sits in the heart of Borough weekend market, with views of Southwark Cathedral.

Fish! is in a large glass box in the centre of the fabulously trend Borough Market, just opposite London Bridge Station, Southwark cathedral and the rather awesome Shard. The Clink, London Dungeon and the river are only a few yards away - so all-in-all a great place to meet for lunch or dinner; particularly in summer where you can eat outside under a tented roof.

Service is fine, prices are good for London but....

It's difficult to say how, and maybe I'm being hyper-crytical, but the food could be, well, better.

If you have battered fish, chips and mushy peas - the classic English Chippie food - it's very good value and exactly what you'd expect and i'd recommend it to anyone.

But if you want something a bit more "chefie" and try the various kinds of fish - I had skate - cooked in various ways - I had grilled - with combinations of sauces - I had salsa verde, it gets quite expensive and the food doesn't really live up to it. (But the fish is always really fresh.)

So, all-in-all, a great place for honest fish and chips and a glass or five of cold white wine - particularly on a sunny, summer's afternoon. Just don't expect too much of it.

As usual, a winner in Borough Market's lively surroundings opposite Southwark Cathedral. Booked online in the morning and when I arrived the reception staff were good. Decent wine list, good fresh fish served in a clean, bright, open restaurant. Specials today included cods' roe but a la carte menu has plenty to chose from anyway.

We came here on a Time Out recommendation as we were only in England for a short time and wanted to have good fish and chips. We saw the restaurant part but it did not appeal to us. Instead we went to the next-door take away that is attached.
You can choose between cod, haddock and plaice. The fish were freshly battered in front of us as were the chips freshly done.

Service was fast and friendly and the food just what we were looking for- out of the box looking out over the river near Borough Market.
A portion of cod and chips cost £8.95 and was well worth it.

Given the midweek evening in February the restaurant was not particularly busy and we were seated at a table for two quickly. Even with relatively few tables occupied it wasn't such a quiet atmosphere. With the busy clatter and sizzle of the open kitchen and the high vaulted goldfish bowl style architecture, the acoustics are never going to be conducive to a quiet romantic candlelit dining experience. But that didn't worry us.

The choice of fish is extensive, the menu kind of chip-shop style, with your options of 'with or without this and that'. You can also choose how you would like your fish cooked, steamed or grilled.

I opted for a £19.95 grilled halibut and a choice of hollandaise sauce, a small vegetable garnish came as the only accompaniment. A £3.50 side of chips seemed to be needed therefore. I was surprised by the size of fillet, the biggest halibut portion I'd ever had in a restaurant, but I guess at almost £20 it had to be. It was cooked OK, maybe JUST slightly overdone, but the tart hollandaise sauce helped to create a succulent mouthful. The star of the plate however, for me, was the vegetable medley! A lovely warm, crisp, tasty mix of carrot, Chinese cabbage and pac choi. Unfortunate to be bowled over by a serving of vegetables in a fish restaurant, but I was.

My partner had the skate wing, with a spicy salsa sauce. Again, a great sized portion and good sauce. I don’t try flat fish much as I always find them somewhat mushy and slimy in texture, and this was no exception.

So, good central location in London, glorified fish and chip menu, hustle and bustle atmosphere, big fish portions, bit pricey !
