Food was delicious. Interesting fish menu. Service was faultless. Although a little lacking in ambience. Would thoroughly recommend a visit.

“It was a triumph”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Quite a small restaurant, but with very professional service and exquisite food. This restaurant really did exceed our expectations. Good use of mirrors on the back wall to give the illusion of space and an interesting glass viewing panel into the kitchen. Excellent homemade breads and also a mise en bouche (pre-starter) of miniature fish cakes. An ordinary dish of fillets of plaice was executed perfectly with distinct flavours from anchovy anna potatoes and sweet red onions. The Chocolate mousse and elderflower and gooseberry crumble were also fantastic. This was followed by more freebies of petit fours ( small orange treacle tartlets and chocolate truffles). We ordered from the set lunch menu which proved to be excellent value. Overall our lunch was a triumph.

“Disappointing and Dull”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

I really was looking forward to going to this restaurant that has Nathan Outlaw's name above the door. He runs a restaurant in Cornwall with two Michelin stars and had great expectations. We arrived at 7.30 on a Friday evening to find us sharing a virtually empty restaurant. I said to the wife that i was sure that later it would be busier, after all it is a Friday night. The room is clinical and lacks any ambience and perhaps would get better if it had a few more diners. When we left just after 9 there remained four diners! The waiting staff were perfectly acceptable in an efficient manner. So to the food; we ordered crispy oysters and hot seafood to start and my oysters were very good and my wife said her hot shellfish was "epic". For the main course i had Turbot on the bone and my wife had Mullet which she said was average. My Turbot on the other hand was not very good at all. The flesh did not pull away easily from the bone and was undercooked and any pieces i did eat had bones. Because it comes with a red wine sauce, there was a very horrible grey mess left on the plate when it was removed. I did say something to waiter but did not get any comment back. Dessert was shared and i remember some sort of elderflower concoction which was very good. The wine list is varied, wide ranging and very expensive. So Nathan, we don't think there will be any stars coming your way for this restaurant unless you dramatically up your game. With your name above the door it also makes me think twice about going to your restaurant in Cornwall. Perhaps you should stay off the television and spend more time in the kitchen here. Like "The Greenhouse" this restaurant has a long tradition of being awarded Michelin stars but this time the owners have made a bad choice.

“A great experience - memorable”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

Occasional visitors to London. like ourselves, often want to experience a variety of restaurants, from chains like Nando's and Masala Zone to the fine dining range, like Outlaw's. Often the latter are a disappointment, not because of some vague, inflated expectation of an exceptional experience but quite simply because the restaurant does not deliver to its reputation in terms of cooking or service - or both. This certainly did not happen with Outlaw's; under every heading it at least met - if not exceeded - our expectations.

It being Thursday, we took advantage of their BYO offer and were able to provide 2 decent bottles for under £30 which helped bring the bill down significantly (£107 for lunch for 3, before tip). Everything about the meal was a pure pleasure. We opted for the £31 (?) for 3 courses + cheese menu. From starters like the crispy fried egg to mains of mackerel and salmon and delicious desserts the food was perfectly cooked and the service was a model of excellence: prompt and efficient in a full dining room, with two knowledgeable waiters whose natural grace and pleasant personalities added hugely to our enjoyment of the meal.

During this trip to London we ate in two establishments which were a bit more expensive than Outlaw's. neither matched it under any heading. Will we be back? Oh yes, most definitely.

“Well presented food in an elegant setting”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

The Capital Hotel is in a street just behind Harrods and the hotel and restaurant have an elegant, calm air.

The staff have a welcoming, professional air and are unobtrusive. The menu is reasonably small, but still made for tough choices, especially at lunchtime between the set menu or the a la carte. We eventually opted for selections from the set menu, which offers good value at 25GBP for three courses.

We went off-road with the wine list and asked the Sommelier to suggest from the Burgundies. She did a great job of understanding our needs and suggesting an excellent white inside a generous budget.

As it was our wedding anniversary a decorated plate came out from the kitchen at the end of the meal, a thoughtful touch.

This was our chosen spot after a toss-up between Petrus, where we'd been before. Outlaws didn't disappoint, but didn't score quite as highly. We'd go again.

Meal for two 50GBP
Wine 130GBP
