Description: Established by Thomas Rule in 1798, Rules is a Covent Garden institution and the oldest restaurant in London. Tuxedoed waiters glide around the formal interior, decorated with antique sketches, where plush banquettes offer a discreet retreat from the main dining room. The whole-hearted menu of traditional British food specialises in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings, featuring game birds, roe deer and Belted Galloway beef fresh from the establishment's own High Pennines estate. The wine list is a French-led affair, or there are native draught beers served in silver tankards.

Went here with some good friends for a afternoon meal. Food was really delicious and the service first class.
For some it maybe a little old fashioned but that really is part of its charm
Lovely garden terrace for drinks too
Highly recommend

There are a few restaurants in the world with this level of classy old fashion service and decoration. Reminiscent of the Tour D'Argeant but more down to earth (although as expensive). Food was not that particularly great, but the overall experience makes up for it. Highly recommended if you haven't been there!

Wow, what an incredible restaurant with so much history behind it. I was very lucky to win a "Royal Cream Tea" at Rules, and went today with my Mum. We had the most amazing time, from start to finish our server Augustine was friendly and polite. We had some delicious canapes, followed by warm soft classic scones with jam & clotted cream, then a fresh slice of cake. We also had mocktails, teas and coffees. Me and mum felt very welcome and comfortable. After we had eaten, we were very lucky to be offered a tour of the restaurant and private dining rooms. It was just a wonderful afternoon. Thank you to all staff. I will recommend this restaurant to family and friends. We will return!!

Rules has been on my radar forever but the visit of some American friends finally triggered a visit here. We started with cocktails in the greenery of the Winter Garden (upstairs, no lift!) which was a great way to relax, We were invited down to the restaurant, all very Edwardian splendour with the waiters in appropriate dress, and they were all very friendly and helpful, Old fashioned, but in a good way, menu items and there were questions about what some of them were, posset for example. Selections were made and the first courses arrived to general delight, the potted shrimp were outstanding. Main courses were variable, two of our American friends had venison biryani which was apparently dry and tasteless although the yogurt dressing almost saved it. The other dishes were traditional British and were better than expected, the steamed steak and kidney suet pudding was magnificent. Desserts all went down very well. The wines we selected were excellent examples of their origins (Beaujolais and Tuscany) although a tad pricey. Service was very friendly and efficient. All in all traditional British food at its best and a great place to demonstrate quality to American visitor

A wonderful meal last night at Rules. Brought my wife for her first experience and she was enthralled. The food, ambience and staff were all superb in equal measure. This is now our "Special Place" when we visit London and is firmly in our hearts from now on ... Thank you ❤️
