Lots of confusion as to which Young Cheng one is referring to. There are 2(?) in Chinatown - one in Lisle St and another in Shaftesbury Ave. I eat in both quite regularly. The former has fairly good dim sum and lobster/crab noodles. The latter is a no-nonsense, no frills, Value for Money place. Both have many Chinese customers. I didnt see the buffet thing in both. I have seen many takeaway customers (mainly roast ducks & roast pork) in both. Service is courteous.

I often visit this establishment with another recent reviewer 'Thomas G' I do not eat anything when I go here, merely act as company. This is due to the smell and look of the place: disgusting.

The buffet is cheap and there are various stinking Chinese foods, so if that is all you want from your visit than fine. The floor is dirty and the staff are very abrupt. You are often shooed onto a table with others, or crammed into a corner.

Despite Thomas G's positive review below I must add that he often has post young-cheng rashes, which cause blotches on his face and hands.

Only take a date here if you never want to see them again.

I go to the buffet here about once a week.
including 30p for a refillable glass of water, the all-you-can-eat buffet costs £7.20.
I mainly go to this buffet for the prawns; as well as being the tastiest things available, they are the best things to eat if you want to get good value for money.
I usually attempt to cover my heaped plate of prawns with boiled cabbage because the waiters often scowl at those who (in their opinion) take too many prawns.
Whilst on the subject of service; the waiters are very abrupt / typically Chinese.
Unless you eat a lot of prawns you will probably feel like you have been exploited.

Two rules of thumb to guess if a restaurant has good dim sum: a long menu of dim sum, and lots of Chinese patrons. Tired of standing in an unorganised queue at Joy King Lau, we ventured into this restaurant. And indeed, the dim sum dishes were quite good, came out piping hot, and the skin on the Cheung Fun (rice noodle rolls) was soft and not too thick - a good sign of cleverness. in general, the steamed dim sum dishes were better than the deep fried ones. Other dishes were ok, but definitely not at par with 'better' Chinese eateries in Chinatown, but hey - this is also cheaper! The management knows how to cater to a Chinese clientele - before you need asking, tea and chili appear, and they have toothpicks ready on the table! Don't confuse this one with 2 others in the same chain - one on Wardour (buffet) and one on Shaftesbury (one bowl). Why can't they give them different names, like Young Cheng Kitchen, Young Cheng Buffet, etc. Reminds me of the Crystal Jade chain in Asia (mainly Singapore), although the latter is several levels of quality higher.
