“Location, Location, Location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

Stayed at this hotel for a birthday visit to London and have to say the location was perfect for us! Right next to Trafalgar Square and a short walk along Northumberland Ave (on which the hotel is situated) to the Thames and also to the Playhouse Theatre. We had tickets for 'Spamalot', which is currently playing there. As for the hotel, the name 'Grand' says it all. The building is very imposing! Our room on the other hand was compact but clean and elegant with everything required for a comfortable night's stay. As the temperature was over 29 degrees during our visit, we were particularly grateful for the complimentary chilled purified water and empty bottles provided which you could top up at a machine outside the rooms and the air-conditioning worked extremely well too. Brilliant! The staff were also very polite and efficient. In my opinion, in all respects, a very good hotel!

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night as we were in town to see Charlie and the Chocolate factory at the Drury Lane Theatre. This is the first time I've stayed in a hotel in central London as we usually stay further out to save money. My review is based on the rate we paid (£135 which I think is a pretty good deal).

First impressions were great, lovely foyer, very grand looking, the man who helped us check in was polite and helpful. The location is fab. Right next to Trafalgar square, 5-10 mins from Covent Garden, 2 mins from Charing Cross Tube station. Looking out of our room we could see Big Ben, the top of Buckingham Palace and to my husbands delight we could see where James Bond stands on the roof at the end of Skyfall - very cool! I thought it was really nice to wake up on Sunday and hear Big Ben chiming gently in the background.

The room was quite compact but perfect for a couple just overnight, it was clean, modern looking with a kettle and tea making facilities, flatscreen TV, CD player alarm clock, temperature controls. The bathroom was nice, again compact but a person of normal size doesn't need much more room than that. There were no 'frills' and it was a very generic looking room so if you're after something fancy and luxurious you'd be disappointed here but it met all our requirements. Down the hallway there is a water machine where you can fill up bottles of filtered water and each floor has a little store cupboard where you can stock up on extra shower gel, tea bags, UHT milk etc which I really liked.

When we got back from our show at about 10pm I was concerned about getting to sleep as the road was very noisy but thankfully our room which was to the back of the building was quiet and the windows seemed to eliminate a lot of the noise. After a nice nights sleep I went to find breakfast outside the hotel (we didn't have breakfast at the hotel as the continental was around £14 and we're not big eaters first thing) - 2 mins round the corner is a Tesco, Pret and Mcdonalds all open early - I bought a pint of milk for 45p and made my husband tea and coffee in the room which saved us money! We didn't eat at the hotel during our stay but the restaurant Boyds looked to have some good set menu deals.

Overall we both enjoyed our stay, even though we're from the UK it was quite a thrill waking up and being in the midst of so many iconic buildings and so lovely to go out and get breakfast before the crowds turn up and seeing Trafalgar Square empty and peaceful!I would definitely stay here again if I could get a similar rate, I wouldn't want to pay anymore than we did though as we only use hotels as a 'base' and spend most of our time sightseeing. If you're looking for luxurious or quirky rooms then you might want to try elsewhere as the rooms are very business orientated which was fine for us as we were just after a modern clean and central base!

Room Tip: The rooms at the back have lovely views of Big Ben and the top of Buckingham Place / st James park...

The rooms here are average -- clean and reasonably well appointed -- but this is all about the location which couldn't be better. Surprisingly quiet room as well. Easy walk to so many tourist sites and 2 subway stations. Just down the street from the Thames and lovely walks along the embankment. Service is attentive and efficient.

Didn't try the restaurant/bar. It is very dark and quite pricey. Lots and lots of places to eat just outside the door.

Tip for families: washer and dryer is free and they supply soap.

Beware: We left via Gatwick and took the Gatwick Express from Victoria Station (good choice). Asked the hotel about cabs to Victoria so they booked us a private car which was double what a cab would have been. Not a huge deal since Victoria is close but be careful you check the price first if booking private transport very far (ie. directly to Heathrow or Gatwick).

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have a view.

The Grand is a good looking building and the staff were efficient. The room was a reasonable size and the bed comfortable. However, the room looked in to a central well, so although it has two windows, very little light came in. There was also a condenser for the airconditioning just outside the window, which was very loud even with the double glazed window closed.
Fortunately I can sleep with ear plugs but the machine noise in this room is not acceptable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a street view.

We have been planning our UK vacation for 10 months and we could not have been more pleased with our first hotel. (selected after much research) The location was perfect! This was our first visit to London and we walked to Westminster Abbey, to the Thames for a cruise and really enjoyed the neighborhood. Lots of shops, restaurants and every mode of transportation. The staff was very accommodating to any requests. Our spacious room was lovely and had everything that we would expect.

Room Tip: If some street noise might bother you, request a room to the rear of the hotel. It wasn't a prob...

We stayed at The Grand for our honeymoon for a few days and it was wonderful, the lobby was gorgeous and well decorated. The rooms were not as fancy, more business-like, but they had everything we needed, and ours had a big window seat with a great view overlooking the streets. The hotel could not be better located, about a 30 second walk to Trafalgar Square, a minute walk to the underground and two minutes to the train station. Parliament, Westminster and Big Ben are all just a short walk away and there is a stop for the Red Bus Tour at the end of the street.

We went to the front desk with all kinds of questions, everything from directions using the underground, to restaurant recommendations, and how to get to the Harry Potter Studio Tour and they were so helpful each and every time. They also let us check in very early since we arrived at about 11am, and waived the fee since it was our honeymoon. All in all, a wonderful hotel and we would stay here again if we are ever in London.
