“A little gem of a place”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Discretely tucked away just a short walk from Oxford Circus and Oxford Street this little gem of a place has much to offer. Stayed for one night in a light spacious room with excellent service. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful and I was suprised that despite being in the centre of london I managed a good nights sleep.

Wonderful character building with a richness of charm that offers a lot at a reasonable price. Whilst predominately used by the medical profession (it is owned by the Royal Society of Medicine) it has plenty to offer the traveller. If you are looking for a quiet location in central london and within easy walking distance of the hustle and bustle of Exford Street, then look no further.

Chandos House was built speculatively by the Scottish architects Adam in the late 18th century and Lord Chandos bought it. It is now a residence of the Royal Society of Medicine. The ground floor is graced with superb Adam public rooms with their characteristic superb plastered ceilings. They are, sadly, function rooms and there is no obvious public lounge.
Breakfast is served in what became the dining room which is occupied by a wide long mahogany table at which all sit. Breakfast, as in many London clubs (and, though owned and managed by the Royal Society of Medicine as an hotel, it is more of a club) is available on restricted hours. It is buffet style serve yourself continental and good enough though the orange juice is unlikely to be other than long life.
My disappointment with my club when I stayed lie with the lifeless coldness of the atmosphere and the basement room I paid over £140 to spend a night in. And I wish I could say the few staff I met were welcoming.
The en suite was a big box built into the room. The bath was not clean. Neither of the two blinds - one roller and one Roman - could be pulled down without a struggle of tugging and pulling at the broken cords. And to add to the outside light beaming in because if the broken blinds were the red glow from the ridiculously large screen on the huge desk phone and the blue glow up the back of the TV from the control box for the latter. At least the good sized fridge held four bottles of "complimentary" water.
Chandos House is an architectural gem. It is run as an hotel. It is, however, depressing with a cold atmosphere and needs more attentive on site management and maintainance. And it costs too much. London has better and more reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Don't accept a basement room if you can avoid it.

Beautiful building and rooms. Booked late for the Olympics and got upgraded to the stunning Chinese suite. Spotless clean, quiet and very well placed. Breakfast is included but should be noted is only continental, no hot food is available.

We stayed here at the weekend and were told on arrival that the lift was not working so they would discount us £10.00 for the room. We were then told that our room was on the second floor, but in actual fact it was on the third floor. This was a problem for me as I am not able to walk up stairs very well. This totally let the whole place down, but there was nothing we could do as it was full. It was pretty obvious that the lifts have not been working for some time, so yu might want to check this before you book.
The room was small, clean and tidy although we would say that it was well worn and the bathroom door did not shut properly unless you really leaned against it and then when it was shut it was nearly impossible to open again.
We felt it was overpriced for what it was although this may be down to it being the Olumpics. The location was good, but it was really not worth this sort of money as we stayed in a 5 star hotel in London recently that didn't cost this much.

Room Tip: If you need to use the lift to get to the top floors, check it is working befor you book this hotel

First trip away as a couple. Just an overnight stay in our capitol to do some shopping, taking in a show( We will rock you....brilliant) and drinks. I wanted somewhere a bit different and this was it..ok usual stuff...
very clean, nice bathroom, clean towels, nice size, warm( this was January) and 24 hour reception....with friendly staff
Unusual bits...it will take you to a part of London you wouldnt normally go......right past Harley Street and smack bang in the middle the medical area. lovely hotel with lots of history. Easy to get around and no problems when we staggered back in.

Thank you Chandos house for a lovely stay

Lovely and stylishly renovated architectural jewel in downtown London, competent and curteous staff, nice room with spotless modern amenities, splendid breakfast arrangement with good buffet and huge, wonderful mahogany communal table, we loved it and will return with great pleasure.

Room Tip: many rooms are basement, but have large windows for ample daylight

Booked Three rooms for one night on laterooms, as I was staying here with friends on a short visit to the city.
The hotel is very grand from the outside and this grandeur continues when heading inside.
24 Hour reception which is great if you have any issues during the night or at anytime.

The rooms themselves were very large - especially for its location on the west end which also meant that Oxford circus was about 2 minute walk away - very handy.

Overall, this hotel was fantastic value, perfectly located and the rooms were fantastic.
Can't fault it.
