Excellent location and very helpful staff. Beds comfortable, room fine though bathroom very small. Wouldn't want to stay around property, obviously not comfortable hotel, but I expect most people want what we wanted -a convenient base. It's location is excellent, and despite this generally very quiet there. Am planning to go again in the future

A simple good sized room, in an amazing central location. A two minute walk from Trafalgar square, staff where always helpful and friendly, right across the road from a good pub selling real ales. The room was very quiet never heard any of the other guests during our stay. Washing facilities more than adequate. Reason why we only gave 4 stars was because the kitchen facilities on our floor where stuffy and incredibly smelly. You would not have wanted to spend more than 5 minutes in the kitchen. But over all Northumberland house was more than adequate for our needs.

Spent two nights here last week whilst on a birthday trip to London and found it absolutely fine. Of course with it being student accommodation, the rooms were bare and the bathroom was a wet room. The downside to this was if someone had a shower, the whole pod was soaked. Also with me being tall I found it difficult to bend over the sink to clean my teeth and wash my face.
That, and the whole communal kitchen thing were the bad points.
Everything else was great. The beds were extremely comfy and I fell in love with my pillow. They are two of the best nights sleep I have ever had, despite being in the centre of a very noisy city.

The location was the best part of it. 2 minute walk to the River Thames. 1 minute walk to Trafalgar Square, 5 minute walk to Covent Gardens and so on. Everything was on our doorstep. The price was also very reasonable.

If you were to stay I would recommend bringing some picnic glasses so you can have a drink in your room and eat out for every meal. It's a great place to stay if you're only using your room to sleep in. I would definitely go back.

tIf you don't need all the bells and whistles of a 5 star hotel, but want a supreme location, this place is for you. At least it was for us! We booked a room here August 11-13, 2012, so we could catch the Olympic men's marathon. It was a last minute trip, from Germany, and was well worth it. The race took 4 trips down Northumberland and we got to see it up close and personal. The front desk crew were very professional and helpful when checking in, and very quick to answer questions and help out when needed. The room was sparse with two twin beds and a tiny bathroom, which included a shower, but we were not there to stay in our room all day and sleeping was easy as it was quiet and the beds were comfortable. It's a dorm room, after all, and that's why you get a good rate. This location was in the block between Trafalgar Square and the Thames River at the Hungerford Bridge. Just across the bridge is The Eye, and a great walkway towards the Tower Bridge. There is a Sherlock Holmes restaurant directly across the street as well as many other restaurants and pubs around the corner. If you need a McDonald's fix, it's just a short walk away. There is no TV in the room and we did make use of the common room on the second floor to watch some Olympic coverage when we needed a break from the crowds of the Square. This location is also walking distance to Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and all the other reasons why we visit London. Rooms are only available while the students are on break so limited to summer and other holidays, but well worth the stay if you want to save a few bucks.

The building is part of the London School of Economics dorm complex. The rooms are basic but clean.

On the upside:
- Location is terrific (next to trafalgar square)
- Plenty of shops, restaurant, supermarkets
- Walking distance to most of the tourists' sites
- Helpful staff at the entrance (I think they are students)
- Cleaning every day (although it's a dorm)
- Kitchen available (need to be brave though)
- Washer/dryer available (1-2 pounds in coins)

Downside:
- Beds not very comfy
- Almos no double beds (remember: dorm)
- Kitchen not inviting (again, dorm)

To sum this up:

If you are up for a great value stay in pricy London than this is for you!

Stayed one night and found the venue central and easy to find. Odd entrance arrangement with me and all successive guests confused by requirements - must push the button on the pedestal in the street and when the speaker beeps and the light flashes, then take the few steps forward to the door and pull door handle to find which one the virtually invisible front desk reception has opened for you. There's no speech from the pedestal. Once inside up the steps to the reception.

The hotel reception staff were great and showed me to my room and the upgrade I enquired about. The corridors were lovely and clean and well decorated. The single room was fine; clean and tidy. The upgraded room on top floor was not to much more and included the widest bed I've ever seen and a few comfy chairs and smart work desk. I didn't need to but upgraded anyway... why not for a bit of fun!

Found that the ensuite was a plastic cubicle pod thing with a shower and sink included. A bit small but quite acceptable given the room rate/value.

After returning from my night out I found that while there was tea and coffee provided, the room seemed to be missing a kettle and cups. Too late (cough early!) to ask at reception.

Lovely comfy firm bed and very pleasant nights sleep.

Thank you LSE Northumberland Avenue. I shall be back again. Affordable, clean and very comfortable.

Time to get up and try the plastic shower pod!

Sorry to have to say this, but this accommodation was a dissapointment. We paid £90 ($140) in advance for a double ensuite. The bathroom is as small as possible. When you sit on the WC your feet are in the shower - I'm not joking! There was no TV and the TV in the lounge was out of order. There was no breakfast included and the so-called communal kitchen was locked and our door pass would not open it. So for the LSE to call this a self-catering accommodation is not correct.

The room itself was large but dirty. The windows were filthy and the frames, cornices and the top of the bathroom 'pod' were covered with dirt. Previous occupants had thrown trash on top of the pod. The double bed was two single beds pushed together with nothing keeping them in place so you could easily slip between the mattresses at night if you weren't careful.

I fully respect the aims of the LSE, but this dirty establishment at these prices is not doing it any favours.

Room Tip: The Sherlock Holmes Pub and Ship and Shovell Pub are both nearby. They both serve real ale and are r...
