“Has its plusses and minuses”
Reviewed August 30, 2008

We were debating whether to give the hotel a three or a four star review. A three and a half, which seems to be what this hotel averages, would have been most appropriate. The Park Plaza County Hall is a new hotel in a wonderful location. We were able to walk to many attractions including Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the Theatre District. The rooms were clean and were suites, which was a big plus for us, since we took our teen aged daughter with us and it was nice to have separate space. If you are looking for a hotel with a suite, this is one for you to consider.
However, be forewarned, as mentioned in other reviews, that the double bed was hard and the sofa bed was like a rock. It was akin to sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor.

After the first day, our room began to smell of sewage (avoid a room ending in "05". When we first complained, we were told that we should first allow housekeeping to investigate the source of the odor. However, 15 minutes later, reception called to tell me that the person in the floor below had complained as well and the problem was obviously one involving the line of rooms. The good thing about the room was that the AC had been working adequately. When we switched rooms, we were given a room where the AC was barely noticeable. Fortunately, the heat wave in London had passed, so it was tolerable. The second room was a corner room and was actually smaller than the first. I would recommend that you give your room a once over before unpacking and request a change if needed.

The lifts were not as slow as I had expected, and the staff was responsive to our complaints. There were a few broken items in both rooms. I think that they cheaped out with the furnishings and supplies when they built the hotel.

All and all, it was not a bad experience, but we would probably stay elsewhere if we returned to London.

We are a family of four, and wanted a place with separate sleeping area for the kids but not a separate room. I contacted London Discount hotels and they offered us a great deal to stay in a Studio Room at the Park Plaza County Hall. There was a bedroom and a small kitchenette with microwave, small fridge, sink and coffee maker (Nespresso) and kettle. Then there was a sitting room with a pull out double bed. Both rooms had TVs, and internet (for a price) and the bathroom was gorgeous with shower and bath.

After reading other reviews I had asked for a room facing the London Eye, Big Ben and Houses of Parliament and we were on the 12th floor with a stunning view. I think facing the other direction may have been disappointing.

The only problem was that though the rooms were separate, there was no door between them and the bathroom had an opaque glass door so there was nowhere to go if you wanted to read when others were sleeping...the lights lit up the whole apartment.

You could easily walk across Westminster bridge, the London Eye was about a block away, and Waterloo Station a couple of blocks away. Also Big Bus Tours had a stop around the corner and the concierge was very helpful with organizing sightseeing. There was a fitness room and sauna, steam room as well.

It was sometimes hard to get the family out of the hotel to see London.

All in all it was a very positive experience.

Just returned from an overnight stay in this hotel. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the hotel met our expectations. The views from our room were great - london eye, big ben and houses of parliment were all quite close.

The room was spacious enough with lots of storage and the bathroom was modern and quite stylish. We did have an issue with the shower, however, a phonecall to the reception resulted in a quick visit from a member fo staff to fix within 5 minutes. We also needed to call reception for towels, cups etc and each time, a speedy service (with a smile) was encountered.

The breakfast was very good with both a continental and english breakfast on offer. The choice for a vegetarian breakfast may be limited so it may help to arrive early (or check availability).

In terms of access to central london, the hotel is very close to Waterloo underground station, however, if you are not afraid of walking, a great many of the local attractions can be accessed in this way.

I would certainly book this hotel again to visit london - good value, great views, great service and great location!

We booked the Park Plaza prior to taking a cruise on the Baltic Sea. We stayed three days and we were treated very well. My wife was not feeling great after the flight and drive in from the airport. The staff went out of their way to get us into our room early and to see that my wife got the rest and care she needed.

We ate several times at the hotel and the food was fine but the service and care of the staff was fantastic. The coffee was a little strong for my taste and the staff always brought me a pot of hot water so I could have a cup to my taste. It was all the little touches that made want to write this review.

Our room was designed around the modern style. Yet it was very quiet and comfortable. We had a nice view but there was some construction going on in one direction but it was not a big distraction. I stayed at much higher priced hotel in London on a longer vacation and for about one third the price this was a much better value and nearly as comparable.

The hotel is an easy walk from the London Eye and gives you access to most of the great places in downtown London. We had another wonderful time in one of the great cities of the world and our stay just added tot he pleasure.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights before going on a cruise from Dover. Although we did not book the hotel through the cruise line, there were a lot of people staying at the hotel that were also going on the same cruise. The hotel seems to cater to tour groups which can be a problem. The lobby area is not large and when there are buses of people being dropped off or picked up the lobby is fully of people and suitcases. This especially creates a problem when you want to use the elevator. There are only 3 smaller size elevators for the whole hotel. This is clearly not enough to service everyone especially at peak times (around 9-10:00 A.M.) It was almost impossible to get an elevator down to the lobby at this time of day. Normally walking down the stairs is not that big of a deal except when you want to check out and have all your luggage with you. We waited over 30 minutes to get an elevator when we wanted to check out. Finally we were lucky enough to find an elevator going up that had some room for us and our luggage and ended up taking the ride up so we could eventually go down to the lobby. Other family members were not as lucky and actually walked down from the 9th floor with all their luggage after 45 minutes of not being able to get an elevator.

The air conditioning in the room was extremely weak which left the room with little air movement and feeling stuffy and warm. The mid 60’s temperature outside was much more pleasant than the room which was a constant 78 degrees. The air conditioner only works when you have the room key in a slot so we would leave our key in the slot all the time. Even that did not help cool the room. We complained twice at the front desk about the air conditioner. Both times they wrote our room number down on a post it note and we were told they would send an engineer to come and look at it. I don’t know if anyone ever came to the room to look at it but the temperature never changed. The front desk just seemed to have an “I don’t care” attitude & the customer service was poor.

A warning about the bathroom - the bathtub is a big step up to get into. This creates problems for people with limited mobility. The shower door is a glass and half the length of the tub. I did like the mirror which had a little heating element so that there was a section that never fogged up. .

For me the major positive about this hotel is the location. It is about a 5 minute walk to Waterloo Station which connects to several lines and allows easy access to most of London. You can also walk across the Westminster Bridge to that tube stop which is right by Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Parliament. The hotel is very close to the London Eye, London Aquarium and Thames River cruises. There are several restaurants close by as well as an ATM.

Overall I felt the negatives outweighed the positives of this hotel and would not stay there on future trips to London.

We stayed here the first two nights of our tour of the UK and Ireland and then our last night. The room was a little small, but of a good quality. We had to push the two twin beds together, which was done easily enough. Twin beds seem to be standard in Europe. The bathroom was fine, but I don't care for the style of shower that doesn't have a shower curtain or door that contains the water within the shower. I've never understood that. The tub was difficult to get into; it's a really big step up for a short person like me, and if you're disabled, forget it. Breakfast was included in the price of the hotel; it was a good, typical "English" breakfast, which isn't all that different from an American breakfast. The hotel's location is right over the bridge to the London Eye, a museum, Big Ben, Parliament, and Westminster Abbey. It's also conveniently located close to a couple of tube stations. I've seen other reviews that complained about the room temperature, but we didn't have that problem. Also, there's major construction going on across the street, but we didn't hear any noise. All in all, I thought it was a great stay!

Made our reservations back before the hotel was open. Had been keeping an eye on the reviews since then. I have to say I was quite impressed.

First, all I can say is, "location, location, location." The location of this hotel is AWESOME. You are about a 3 min. walk to the Waterloo Underground which connects to several lines allowing easy access to most of London. It is literally across the street from the London Eye, aquarium and riverboat cruise access. Across the bridge from Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. We could actually see Big Ben from our room!

Second, the rooms are well appointed. Not all hotels in London can accommodate 3 adults in a room, this one could. While not large, there was plenty of room, the bathroom was quite spacious and the beds were VERY comfortable (even the foldout couch was comfortable) and the bathroom was modern. It was cool walking into the room and having the main bed right there, a small hallway with plenty of lighting (kitchenette on the left, bathroom on the right) and opening into a living room with foldout couch, desk area and extra seating.

Third, the staff was very accommodating. The first night we had challenges with the temperature in our room. The staff did everything they could to accommodate us, the manager personally went to the main temperature controls and lowered it, and provided an oscillating fan when the air conditioner just wasn't doing the trick. The next day they offered to move us, but we asked that their engineer look at it one last time. When we got back that night, it was significantly cooler.

The hotel also has an executive package you can add on for 15 pounds per person/per night, that includes breakfast, dinner drinks and free internet access, well worth the cost.

The one thing I would recommend is to ask to be on the 13th floor if possible. As others have commented on, the elevators are quite small and can get rather crowded. There were times when we went to the executive lounge on the 2nd floor where we had to wait for several elevators before one came that had room.

Again, I would strongly recommend this hotel. You get quite a bit for your money.
