“Great place to stay while enjoying London”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

We have just got home after 5 fantastic days in London. Staying at The Cleveland was absolutely a pleasure. The room was large, kitchen and bath. With huge windows and A/C. The staff was so great. Took our luggage and showed us to our room. Cleaning every day, also what we had been using in the kitchen. It couldn`t have been better. We will go back. From now on this is our favourite place to live in London..And we have been here 15 times before. Thank you guys for making this holiday so pleasant:

To be fair, the Cleveland is ideally located and it is always booked to near capacity, so it must well priced for what it offers. But I don't think it's anywhere near 4 star, and our room didn't provide the natural light and air that, by default, we discovered are so necessary for our real enjoyment.

We arrived at 6 am in London, 24 hours after leaving Sydney and with a scant hour or so of sleep during our flight. The Cleveland reception staff stored our luggage until we were allowed access to our room at 2 pm, which we knew was the established check-in time. When we returned, desperate to get to bed, the reception manager was having a leisurely smoke at the front of the hotel. Five minutes later, he came inside and told us our room was not ready yet, so to relax in the reception area which was a couple of tatty leather lounges in front of his desk.

Twenty minutes later, we were led to our room, where our luggage had already been installed. It was on the ground floor at the back of the hotel. It had windows but, as we discovered later, the view was merely of the windows of hotel management offices opposite which overlooked our room, and a metal-clad bunker in a basement courtyard. This small area served as the very ineffective lightwell at the base of a building several storeys high. We were pretty disappointed at the first impressions, which was nothing like the hotel's website photos, but were more glad to immediately fall into bed and sleep uninterrupted.

Our disappointment deepened the following morning when we discovered we had to keep all the lights on throughout the day and night. Even worse, it was hot and the windows were fixed to open a maximum of two inches. Given that there was no movement of air in the enclosed space externally, and the temperature was hovering around the mid twenties in a warm, late summer, we felt as though we were suffocating - and in gloomy darkness.

The kitchenette had no powerpoint, so we had to juggle first the kettle and then the toaster, one by one, on the very small bedside table nearby which was inconvenient and dangerous. The TV could only be viewed from the bed (a very comfortable, king size bed), so we ate our toast and tea perched on either side. When my mug of tea slid off my plate and spilled onto the floor, I understood why the carpet was wet when we first arrived. It was a big relief as we had discovered (from the fixtures around the toilet in the bathroom and the spacious layout throughout - and from the shower stool in the wardrobe) that we were in a suite equipped for the aged and disabled and the damp carpet was more than a little offputting.

We had a wonderful time in London and the Cleveland was fabulously central for all the places we wanted to go, both for walking or easy access to stations and buses.

The message is, be sure of what you are getting before you pay for it in advance: an email to the hotel requesting details of your essentials is a wise precaution - for us, as we discovered, there are just two, natural light and air.

Really nice place to stay. Tucked away so nice and quiet (apart from a slightly noisy air-con unit outside the window). The room was spotless and the bathroom was modern and spacious. Handy little kitchen within a cupboard which had everything you need. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The bed was THE most comfortable bed ever and struggled to leave it! Just one word of advice... If you need a taxi it's best to go and hail a black cab. We used one that was booked for us by the hotel and it was double the cost of a regular cab.

Pros: Location near Hyde Park super for morning runs. It's also a very quiet neighborhood. London is such an expensive city that a reasonably priced hotel is itself a good thing. It's nice to have a sink and a fridge (even though our fridge happened not to work properly and our kids couldn't get any cold water out of the tap).
Cons: Guests are allowed to smoke on the basement patio, which seems like it should be OK, except that this means you can't open the window, which is a problem in the summer. I imagine that the problem would be at least as bad with windows that open onto the street, since everyone smokes out there as well.
All in all, this is an OK place to stay, with some caveats.

Stayed here for my hen weekend. Great location - 5 minute walk to Paddington and Queensway tube stations. We had one larger room and a double. Both were clean, nicely decorated and bright. The small kitchens are very handy indeed and have all that you could need. Bathrooms are clean and modern with great showers and beds are very comfy. Had a great stay here and was exactly as I had hoped it would be. Would recommend and would stay here again.

Beautiful London Townhouse Hotel. Rooms Comfortable and Well Appointed. A Good Place to Stay For Good Price in Very Expensive City. I Couldn't Find Any Other Hotel At the Time We Were Staying For Under $200. This Was a Great Mid-Level Hotel IN a Beautiful Neighborhood-Paddington. Very Convenient If Coming From Airport-Paddington Express Airport Shuttle Within Walking Distance of Hoel. Can Also Walk to Kensington Gardens and Many Main City Sights.
