Having read some of the reviews of the Golden Star before arriving, it's fair to say I was not expecting much. But nothing could have prepared me for just how truly AWFUL this 'hotel' is.

We were greeted by a grubby man in a cramped stairwell, (apparently what passes for a reception area here) with a mixture of confusion and disinterest. We were made to write our details on a piece of scrap paper, pay up front in cash (after having him quibble about how much was actually owed) and then shown to our room.

The room, in short, was smelly, dirty, damp and dismal. The tap dripped continuously, no soap or hand sanitiser was provided, no towels, nothing. Next door to our room was our shared toilet / shower combo room, essentially a mouldy cupboard where one is expected to step over a toilet bowl to get into the shower. Again, nothing looked clean or maintained. We would certainly not be showering while staying here.

Perhaps the greatest insult of all was that we were not even provided with a duvet on our bed. Just a dirty mattress, two stained pillows and what can only be described as an oversized tablecloth to sleep under. We ended up sleeping fully clothed with coats on to stay warm. This was in late February, goodness only knows how anyone could sleep in this room in December or January.

To summarise, our experience was wholly and irrevocably unacceptable. Nobody, regardless of budget, deserves the kind of accommodation found in the Golden Star. Do not give these people your money. Avoid at all costs.

Firstly after booking online, there was no record of our booking. The hotel itself location wise, was great the actual hotel was down right disgusting. Poor excuse of reception was two grotty chairs in a tiny passage way, I had to write details on a small ripped piece of paper, very unprofessional.

Before we got to the room we were pre-warned that the room would be dirty, as housekeeping had not gone there (it was 1pm!!) and that we may be moved, we'd find a note on the door! On entrance to the room we found a VERY dirty, filthy room. Damp stained walls, ruffled bed sheet. dirty carpet and full bins. Haven already paid and it only being for a night we would grin and bare it! As we'd have breakfast in the morning as well. I even took video evidence to show my husband on return, it was laughable! Something you would see on a comedy sitcom!

The shower/toilet room was as big as a shoebox, my 3 year old couldn't sit on the seat properly as it was that cramped, it was dirty and leaking and you'd have to climb over that for the shower, something which I would not even dream of doing.

After a vital hospital appointment, we returned to room at 5pm to the smell of fresh paint and staff in our room cleaning. The walls had been re-painted to hide dirt and damp, the sheet changed and floor hoovered and a third storey window left open (we where travelling with a toddler)

The sheets where exactly that, duvet covers without duvets. The double bed was pressed against window. Thats how basic the basic room was, I though there would be some standards.

The breakfast was insulting! 3 of us to share 2 pieces of toast. 2 bowls of cereal, (one spoon) and a mug of tea!

Overall it is by far the worst hotel I have ever had the displeasure! We had a disgusting small dirty room to share between two girls and a toddler, a cold night given just a sheet to share and then a pathetic breakfast! AVOID! I will be contacting hotel for refund, and considering trading standards. as I have it on video the state of the hotel!

One positive- Staff were nice.

We arrived at 11am, and under the snow we waited for 20 minutes outside before someone opened..there was no reception and this gentleman wanted to immediately cash and disappeared...came back 15 minutes later saying that the room was ready....the room was terrible, cold, dirty, wc and shower did not work!!!
The smell was very terrible, there were no towels and the bedding of the previous customers had not be changed!!! We slept without sheets and the bad made because it was very very dirty....the breakfast was prepared in a room full of trash and dirty clothes, and brought to the room by this man who took care alone of all the tasks..but the worst is yet to come! the night you could hear strange noises behind the walls, like rats scratching!we had booked for a week, but the next morning we wanted our money back and we escaped!! this hotel (if you can call it) should be removed from the sites of booking because in any case they do not know anything about the book since it does not even have a computer! someone should just send a check for the hygiene and shut it down!

The room was ideally located and the service was superb. The perfect hotel for somebody on a budget. We accidentally locked our keys in the hotel and the staff were understanding and helpful and even allowed us extra time in the hotel the next day. Thanks again.

It is what it is, one of the cheapest hotel in London! But it's not as bad as what you think it is.
Basically, it's a hostel style, but with a personal service.
The staff is actually trying its best to make it as nice as possible, in such a little building.
Note for travellers: bring your own towel.
