5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2010

ABOUT US: My Hubby & I were meeting up with his Mom @ Heathrow Airport for a jam-packed week of London sightseeing. We wanted a comfy, budget-friendly hotel close to a tube station, so we could get the best use of our London Pass & 7 day travel card (all bus & rail inc..)

OUR HOTEL REQUIREMENTS: in addition to being within a 5 min. walk of a tube station & within 30 min. to central London, we wanted a private bathroom + 3 real beds- (no pullouts or couch beds) + non-smoking + fridge + TV + elevator + Iron & Ironing board + blow dryer + coffee/tea maker + breakfast & Wi-fi included. If you've been doing your research, you'll know this is not an easy task.

THE CHOICE: We are SO HAPPY we discovered the Kingsland Hotel! After making sure all our requirements were checked off, I started lurking on Trip Advisor and other sites to see HOW this hotel could offer such an INCREDIBLE bargain??....It seemed the main cons for most reviewers was that the street noise could be a problem- no prob for us, because we sleep with earplugs and use an ocean sound machine anyway. The other con for travelers was the 30 min. tube ride into the city- we didn't mind due to having the free rail card and with all the amenities this hotel offered, it seemed a fair trade-off.

BOOKING: So we dove in and reserved a triple deluxe room. I called the manager Laxman to confirm over the phone, as I get nervous after booking online & always like to hear a voice letting me know we are in the system. Laxman was efficient & friendly and confirmed that we were all set.

TRANSPORT FROM HEATHROW: Upon meeting up with Hubby's Mom at Heathrow Airport, we knew the tube was out of service from the airport and that the Heathrow Express would be $100 for the 3 of us. We lucked-out that it was a low traffic Sunday and got a taxi door to door for around $80. I know if you're from the USA that sounds high, but the US Dollar is at a terrible exchange rate right now and London is spendy even when the rate is favorable.

RECEPTION/Breakfast: We arrived at the Kingsland early - around 10.20am, as check- in wasn't 'til 1PM, but the Manager was very welcoming, had us set our bags down and kept the breakfast room open late so we could have coffee, tea, juice, milk, cereal, yogurt, fruit, muesli, toast, cheese, etc.

BTW: A big bonus is the handy WC located right off the lobby. Probably don't need to go into great detail how advantageous having an extra facility is when you have 3 adults sharing one WC in the AM :)))

NEIGHBORHOOD: While our room was being prepped, we went for a stroll in the neighborhood. Our favorite restaurant ended up being "JJ Moons" -the local pub; it's a chain restaurant with good food, friendly service & reasonably priced drinks. There are also some tasty pizza & chicken take-out joints near the hotel for those late night bites. We stretched our legs in the park nearby and enjoyed the lovely fall foliage. Kingsbury is a bustling mulit-culti community- we were surprised to see so many people out & about on a Sunday.

THE ROOM: Back at the hotel, our room was ready by noon and were pleased with our nice-sized corner unit on the 3rd floor. Yes, it faced the noisy traffic circle, but we were prepared for that. Our private bathroom was small (normal for Europe) but very clean and the towels were fluffy.
BTW when traveling in Europe most hotels don't offer wash cloths, so we always bring our own along. The fridge wasn't in the room as advertised, but that was quickly corrected with a call to the front desk.

SERVICE: Anything we needed or had questions about was resolved immediately. Laxsman the manager was so accommodating- Example: we Emailed our boarding passes to him the day before our flight and he printed them out for us at no extra charge. Laxman also arranged for a bargain taxi ride for our departure back to Heathrow Airport.

INTERNET: As posted in previous reviews, the in room WiFi could be weak at times, but we found it manageable and were happy that we could stay in our jammies, plan our daily schedule & check on our business stuff before setting out for the day.

TUBE: Our "Jubilee" line stop Kingsbury station was closed on the weekend due to repairs on the line, (beefing up for the Olympics) but the bus over to Wembley park was close by & convenient and only a minor irritation. The other lines being closed in London were more problematic, but we worked our way around it, wanting to experience the annual event "The Lord Mayor's Show" http://www.lordmayorsshow.org/

THE SAD: The week went by too quickly and even with our crazy schedule of events and trying to squeeze every bit of value out of the "London Pass & Travel card,' we still didn't fit it all in! Sigh....guess we'll have to go back again :)

Thanks again to Laxman & his wonderful crew @ the Kingsland Hotel!

Set on Kingsbury, a small town outside of London, nothing to see or do here; however our intention was to get a nice room and bed with a full private bath; with a 30 minute tube ride to London our vacation was very cool. Good value for money. Street rooms a bit noisy. Breakfast in need of cold meats. The rest comfortably!

Nice easy to find hotel, near to tube station (although it was not open on the weekend of our visit).
The rooms were reasonably clean, nice size, comfortable bed, tv only had 4 channels that worked no bbc1 though.
Our main concern was the traffic noise, our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking a very busy roundabout, there was buses, cars, police sirens and ambulances going past until very late at night and again early in the morning. If the windows had been double glazed this may have helped cut down on traffic noise.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, the buffet breakfast was excellent.
Would recommend this hotel, but I would request a room at the rear of the hotel next time.

I had read a number of reviews for hotels closer to town and was looking for a hotel to bring a family of two adults and two children to. My biggest problem was the "children' are 18 and 19. When I tried to book on line or call the hotels, I was told due to their age, I would be charged close to or even double for the room if they were to say there. This included family rooms advertized for a family of four. Most just said I would need to book the girls a separate room. I saw some good reviews for this hotel and gave them a call. I asked about the family room and told them the girls ages. The woman on the phone said "A family of four is still charged as four even if the kids are grown." or words to that effect. I booked a family room for the week.

We arrived on the weekend and the nearby tube station was shut down so we needed to take a bus from the previous station, not a big deal. We arrived early and got a warm greeting from the manager. He told us the room was not ready, but he took our bags and suggested we check out the neighborhood and have some lunch. Having previously goggled the area, we knew what to expect, except it seemed much nicer in real life. Nearby you have a Tesco, a car phone warehouse, a couple of pubs, many small shops and restaurants, and of course a very convenient tube station. Having been to London before, a nearby tube station was on my list of must haves. The people in the area are very friendly and we went to a nearby pub. the pub was called J J Moons. It is part of the Wetherspoon chain of pubs. All Wetherspoon pubs I have ever been to serve good food at good prices, this one was no exception. The food, drinks , and atmosphere were so good, we returned there three more times during our week in London.

We went back to the hotel and were pleasantly surprised with the size of our room. We had no AC so we had to open the windows. I expected the traffic noise to be a noticeable from the roundabout, but it wasn't bad and not a lot of traffic in the evening. The free wireless internet was a little week in the room. This resulted in connecting being dropped frequently. we found if the computer was used by the door, this did not happen as often. When the computer was taken out near the stairs, a good signal was available and with plenty of speed to carry good quality phone calls using Skype on the laptop. The staff acted like a family, they appeared to enjoy their work and each others company. Always a friendly attitude when we spoke to them or even passed them in the hall. The manager, always seemed to be working at his desk and always gave a big smile and a greeting each time he saw us. The breakfast we really quite good, with cereal, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries, muffins and even a jar full of chocolate bars in case you felt you were eating too healthy. There also juice, and hot drinks available.

If you are traveling from outside the UK, you might want to pick up a cheap mobile phone. I shopped at Carphone Warehouse (There is one across the street) £16 each included phone, charger and £10 of prepaid credit to keep in touch with each other when we got separated, and to call home. I understand these phones come unlocked and can be used on different networks by replacing the SIM card if you are traveling outside of the UK and want to keep costs down.

The commute by Tube did take a little while, but no matter where you stay, you will need to commute at some point. Adding ten or fifteen minutes to your trip sitting on a never very crowded train is not a major hardship. We were there to take in the sites anyway and as most of the extra trip is above ground you can look out the window. You will find the transport cost to be slightly higher then if you had stayed within zone one and two, but if you avoid the peak rush, the daily maximum on your oyster card is not much more.

To get from Gatwick by train is very easy. You can pay for the Gatwick Express at the station or on the train, you can also buy a Oyster (London Transport) card at the Gatwick train station or wait until you get to Victoria Station. The Gatwick express will take you directly to Victoria Station. From there, take the Victoria Line North to Green Park Station (One Stop) {Warning at this station you will need to climb some stairs. This is not uncommon for the London underground due to its age. If you are disabled you need to check the London transportation map for alternatives.} Take the Jubilee Line north to Kingsbury Station. {More Stairs} as you exit the station, turn left walk down the sidewalk. You will soon see the hotel. Make your way around the roundabout and you are there.

Pros;

Nice neighbouhood amenities
Good friendly service
Family friendly
Reasonable price
Good breakfast
Close to Tube station
One tube stop from Wembley Park

Cons;

Increased commute time to and from city center
No air conditioning
Weak wireless internet signal
Small Bathroom

Only one complaint, they forgot to supply extra replacement toilet roll (twice). Replacement was provided on requst.

I will recomend this hotel to others.

This hotel was everything it advertised to be - affordable, clean, and friendly.

I was traveling with my friend and parents, and required a room with a double bed and two twins. Our room had just that - though one of the "twins" was a roll-out underneath the actual twin bed, but other than being on the floor was exactly as comfortable. The bathroom is pretty small, as I understand is typical in Europe - if you're a large person you may have a bit of trouble maneuvering around in there.

It was difficult to do research on the location beforehand, and when we first stepped out of the Underground we regretted our decision a bit - at first glance, it's quite a seedy area around the station. However, once we got acclimated we realized it wasn't "seedy" in the typical American inner-city way; things just weren't very pretty to look at that far away from central London. We felt very safe in the area, even coming back to the hotel after midnight.

The commute in and out of central London was a drag - 45 minutes (the hotel advertises 30) each way can get tiring after a long day of sightseeing - but that's how you score the cheap hotel deals I suppose - nothing in central London compared, price-wise.

The hotel itself was wonderful - helpful manager running the front who was willing to answer any questions, navigate public transit options for you (very useful to us as we were there on a bank holiday and our Underground line closed for a day!), all in all extremely helpful; the place had a small cozy feel (much preferable to that cold large-hotel feeling), and a charming breakfast room in the morning with an adequate smattering of breads, cheeses, crackers, fruits, juice, milk, coffee, hot water for tea, a toaster for biscuits and toast, cereal... we were well-fed every morning, included in our room price!

Wi-Fi is free, but didn't work in our third floor corner room so we had to use our laptop in the lobby.

In dealing with location, you get what you pay for, but as for service, we were surprised and more than satisfied.

I heard about them from my office colleagues, I always stayed here in business trips to London, except once/twice. It's close to Kingsbury station and the walking stretch hosts Indian Restuarants on both sides. Community is mainly Gujrati over there. The manager who stayed during the day, Laxman Bhai, really took good care of guests. Breakfast was abundant and we could use the area for dining in the evening by ordering food from outside. There's always a host of South Asian people here. I have seen lot of TV Artistes (Nausheen Ali Sardar, etc), Shaan, staying here also. It's location is good and I have become friends with most restuarant managers over there also. Very homely atomsphere for Indians.
