Location excellent, only a couple of minutes walk from Marble Arch tube station. Situated in a quiet road only minutes from Oxford Street.
A small hotel with staff who go out of their way to be friendly and helpful.
A lovely lounge to relax in where you were offered free tea and coffee.
We will certainly stay there again on our next trip to London

Just returned from a very enjoyable stay at the Sumner. Staff all very welcoming and although it would have been nice to have a drinks tray in the room, it was never any issue for tea to be brought to the room at any time (wide selection of teas too). Having paid £175 for a deluxe room, I would have really liked to have a bath so just a shower was a bit of a disappointment. Also, it would have been nice to have some complimentary shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser - the bath gel was a little redundant!
The room was clean, comfortable and spacious with a nice high ceiling, big comfy bed and large TV. We were in 101 which is a ground floor room and there was minimal/intermittent traffic noise all night but nothing you wouldn't expect in central London. In fact I cannot believe that some people have complained about street noise on other reviews - it's central London! I always carry ear-plugs so I wasn't disturbed at all and slept like a log. I also found that we weren't woken up early by general crashing and banging of other guests and staff as has happened in many other London hotels.
My other minor disappointment was the breakfast. The only cooked offering was being kept warm so the eggs were dried out and the beans congealed. There was no bacon at all. For my £175, I would have loved to have the luxury of a cooked to order breakfast. As it was, I settled for the cold meat and cheese and some toast, all of which was perfectly adequate.
Overall, I couldn't fault the staff, the location and the comfort and I would stay again.

booked this for hubbys birthday, had read reviews that said it was a nice hotel, off oxford street, but in a lovely quiet area, 5mins from marble arch tube station. Staff were lovely and very accommodating, hotel was lovely and clean, and access to room was very easy. the room was very spacious and bright, with a flatscreen tv on the wall , adjustable to watching in bed. Little set of toiletries in the bathroom, and great power shower, fluffy towels and heated towel rail. Breakfast was delightful, everything imaginable to choose from , some delicious cheeses, ham, fresh fruits, i didnt have any cooked breakfast, but hubby said what he had was nice. Breakfast room was bright and welcoming. we paid £160 per night. check in and check out was trouble free, some lovely places nearby to eat, we were very pleased we chose this hotel. Nice lounge area downstairs with lots of info to browse. only thing i would comment on is that i would have liked a tea/coffee tray in the room, i know the staff said whenever you want you can have complimentary tea etc, but wouldnt like to keep ringing down to reception to ask for one. there was water in the room and mini bar, and the coffee i had on arrival was lovely with little chocolate tea cakes on the tray, thanks for a lovely stay

Good location on the edge of Mayfair close to shops and restaurants. The staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble. The room was a good size particularly for a city hotel. Lots of nice little touches. I would definitely return to this hotel and highly recommend it.

I have never bothered to contact a hotel or leave a review after a stay but am doing so because of my disappointment and lack of response by this hotel to the comments they solicited. My comments are (a) no room safe, (b) 2/3 incorrect wake-up calls, (c) security concern re no overnight staff to answer the phone, (d) bad TV reception, (e) limited amenities (no lotion or conditioner), (f) lifts land in between floors so stairs are involved, (g) confusing or incorrect tourist info from front desk, (h) non-descript decor, and (i) no inquiry or thanks on check-out. I did not enjoy my stay and have had much better experiences at other hotels in the same area.

This is a B&B that provides everything we needed, but no more. That is probably why it is good value for money, especially given its extremely central location. We have stayed two or three times, for a combiination of business and pleasure. The building feels like a safe haven, away from the hustle and bustle from nearby Oxford Street. The living room is an important asset, providing a space to relax away from the albeit good-sized and clean rooms. As others have said, the staircase is narrow so you will want to use the small lift if you have anything but carry-on luggage. The buffet breakfast is very solid (providing both traditional English and Continental choices) and will set you up for the day. Service is great with, as in almost all small hotels in England nowadays, a core staff from European countries, so don't expect much local knowledge. This was fine for us as I grew up in the neighborhood. Good local dining at the Portman -- get there early -- and other local pubs, Indian resturants etc. Thoroughly recommended with one small exception....on two visits we have spotted a small number of bugs, apparently coming up through the drainage. Note: we have always stayed on the basement floor.

Room Tip: Probably worth staying on a higher floor.

We stayed at The Sumner for 4 nights in November 2012. We got an airport transfer to the hotel and as there is no large signage over the building (which is typical of large hotels), our driver was unsure if we were at the right place. There is an understated plaque at the door but you won't see it until you are standing in front of it. It is a beautiful building in a perfect location. Close to the Marble Arch tube, easy walking distance to Oxford street and shopping, and close walking distance to Hyde Park.
The room was large (we had just been to Paris where the room was tiny so this was a welcome change), clean, and quiet. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast had a great selection of savoury and sweet. Also worth noting, the hotel had wifi.
We hope to return to London some time in the future and we will definitely choose to stay at The Sumner again. We really enjoyed our time there and would recommend it for other travellers.
