There are three galleries including one showing a changing temporary exhibition showing about 230 works which are densely hung. Please note the museum is totally self-funded, receiving NO money from government or local government. To enable as many people as possible to visit, reductions are available for students, concessions and it's totally free to under-18s, Art Fund members and Friends of the Museum. We are closed on Mondays but OPen BANK HOLIDAY MONDAYS. Closed over Christmas/New Year.

“a great little gem”
Reviewed January 29, 2012

the cartoon museum is one street over from the British Museum.

There is a small charge to get in as it does not received any funding.

A visit takes between 30-60 minutes and there is a mix of fixed displays and changing displays and a great shop.

There are some amazing original cartoons in here. There are some very old examples, some which spark memories from childhood and some more recent ones. Something for everyone in here!

“Not to be confused with your Disney cartoon”
Reviewed October 24, 2011

This is a very interesting little museum near the British Museum that explores British cartooning and comics but there is not an emphasis on children's cartoons. There is a section on animation that involves very young children but if you are thinking your Disney of Cartoon Network loving child will be enthralled-probably not. But older kids and those interested in art will enjoy it very much. There are a lot of political cartoons, historical cartoons and popular British cartoons. While we were there they had a show featuring Doctor Who. My 13 year old was enticed, looked into the doctor and is now enthralled. They also have classes, workshops, and special events. Though adults cost 5 pounds 50, children are free and unlike America, children means under 18 not 10. They also have a nice selection in the gift shop of books, posters, cars etc.

“Intimate and informative”
Reviewed October 24, 2011

It's true - this is a collection with a very specific focus, and how lovely that it is a smallish gallery space, well-laid out, the work well hung. Maybe, if cartoons aren't your thing this isn't for you, but you might learn something here about our fantastic tradition of lampooning. You could top that up with a trip to Sir John Soane's Museum nearby and look at Hogarth's Rake's progress.

Attractive shop, and helpful staff.

“Good if you like cartoons and want to see the current exhibition”
Reviewed September 9, 2011

I'd never been to the Cartoon Museum before but was tempted by their current exhibition of Doctor Who comic artwork which is very good. The exhibition was well presented and had lots of original Doctor Who artwork dating back to the 1960s and loaned by the artists, which was beautiful.

The museum is quite small so for £5.50 it's probably only worth visiting if you love comics & cartoons or are really interested in their current exhibition. It's free for under 18s though, so great if you're entertaining kids as they have an activity area and place where kids can have a go at drawing their own cartoons.
