Owner description: The Ginstitute provides a unique and unrivalled opportunity to better understand the true spirit of London. Patrons begin their spirituous journey in the UK's second smallest museum - The Ginstitute. Our Gin Instructor will take you through the long and frequently miserable, history of gin. From the drink's origin as a medicine, through the gin craze that gripped Britain for 200 years and onto the Golden Era of gin as a cocktail ingredient and finally how gin has taken it's position in the modern world. Once the History lesson is over, it's time to head upstairs to The Still Room, where Ginterns will test their senses with a tutored tasting and nosing of the key botanical ingredients of London Dry Gin, ready to create their own bespoke one-of-a-kind, unique and hopefully delicious gin. To mark their graduation, students will be presented with a full-size bottle of their own personal blend, the recipe for which will be kept on file for you to reorder as often as you need! Sessions need to be booked in advance.

This was a great evening - a fascinating tour of the history of gin followed by gin tasting and creation of your own custom gin to take home. This is really good value as well - an interesting and insightful evening, several gin cocktails and two large bottles of gin to take home (one custom and one house).

A great and different way to spend an evening - highly recommend.

I had read a couple of reviews that suggested that the Portobello Star staff were a bit unfriendly, but we found the whole experience wonderful. The staff were welcoming and friendly and Jake was so enthusiastic about his subject. The talk about gin (given in a perfect little old fashioned room above the pub, decorated like a gin palace) was interesting and funny. The mixing of the gin in a wonderful room that was like an old chemistry lab / apothecary's shop was fascinating. We were a group of 10 and everyone was friendly and enthusiastic.

As well as drinking gin and tonics and Tom Collins and martinis we got to taste all the different botanicals that can go into London Dry Gin - again really interesting. The mixing of your individual gin was a real privilege. I found it absolutely wonderful and I don't even like gin!

A group of 9 of us decided to visit the Ginstitute last weekend and it really was the best afternoon.
Jake was knowledgeable and informative and we had a lot of fun learning about the history of gin, and finally creating our very own recipe to take home. This, along with drinks throughout the afternoon and a bottle of Portobello gin made the experience incredibly good value for money.

My best buddies of over 40 years presented a visit to the Ginstitute as our wedding present in September last year and having a shared joy of discovering and tasting new gins we were all set for much excitement. Our April trip to London didn't disappoint. What a brilliant way to spend an afternoon in London. Do go to the bar first for lunch and order up lots of bread based starters - we did and managed to survive. Jake is a walking encyclopedia of the history of Gin - and what a history it has had. Loved it - but then I love most things connected to gin. We are currently sampling our 3 different Portobello Road varieties. Yum! A great day out and a great way to share a few hours with new friends with the same passion for the "Mothers' Ruin". All praise to Jake Burger.

We took a group of 12 people along for a friend's Stag do and had a great time. It was an extremely interesting and fun afternoon, with plenty of drinks to keep us merry. We all got to make up a bottle of gin under Jake's watchful eye, in addition to the bottle of Portobello Gin which came with the session. Jake was happy to answer all our questions (there were many) and all in all, in was a really great afternoon doing something totally different, and great value for money. Definitely worth a go!
