“Nice budget hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2010

Excelsior group of hotels is a real value for money proposition , especially if one is looking to spend some time in london to get accustomed to its attractions. The location is the killing factor here. Its almost just 2 minutes away from the Kings Cross underground station. The rooms are airy and tidy. The only point i would be putting as a negative aspect is , single rooms are bit too congested for a single person to be in. Break fast is good. Overall a nice budget hotel to be in.

The beauty of this place is its location. We stayed twioce purely to use te Eurostar at St Pancras which is literally a few minutes walk down the road.
When we arrived on both occasions in the early evening we were greeted by two not overly helpful male receptionists. They did they're job but without a smile and it made us feel as though we were a hindrance more than a customer. On the second occasion we had booked to stay in an en-suite but only had a basic - but this wasn't a problem as we just wanted a place to stay and leave asap for the trip home.
1st visit was fine. small room but clean. Only one towel. Someone elses luggage that we had to return to reception and no hot water in the communcal showe in the morning.

Breakfast wasn't great but could fill you up if required. We didn't bother with breakfast on the second occasion!

2nd trip - tiny room but again clean.

Overall location is great. The hotel is fine if its a place to stay only which I imagine is why people would want it. Service left a lot to be desired.

Recommendation for location only!

We travelled london for the holidays and thinking to stay in the central location of london.

On searching we found the Excelsior as best hotel in Kings Cross, london.

It was absolute stunning experience and the hotel had fulfilled our imagination. On personal note as a tourist i would suggest to have a stay and enjoy the experience.

Some staff were excellent (eg the guy who fixed my wi-fi connection), but others could barely speak English. The wi-fi, even when connected, was very slow - almost too slow to be usable. Bed was comfortable and bathroom clean. But the milk at breakfast was off and the breakfast staff spoke very little English.

Booked hotel 3 weeks before travel . Difficult to find somewhere for I adult, 2 pensioners and 2 teenage boys 14 & 16 but this hotel fit the bill. Comfortable clean suite with 2 double beds and a single (not a camp bed ) and not cramped at all.Bathroom/kitchen with excellent shower. We all had good nights sleep and no noise from road.A bedside table and chair would have made it a little more comfortable for sitting .Breakfast was cereal , juice and unlimited toast with tea/coffee.Rooms cleaned, beds made and towels changed daily. All in all a good base for visiting London.
For Tube we bought an off peak daily Travelcard (if you use family Railcard it is reduced)4 adults one child £21.00 for all zones per day.
Travelcard also gets a third off city cruises.

My family stayed at the Excelsior Hotel at Argyle Square for a long weekend in October. We had pretty much the same experience as other people on here regarding the reception two doors up and the trip down to the basement and the very small room with two double beds and one single, and the strong smell of cheap air freshener. We had booked the Quin room, as shown in the very nice (but misleading) image on the website, as this looked to be an ideal set up for us and two teenage children allowing us all an element of privacy. We had looked at all being in one room but found the option shown for the Quin to be preferable. So we were very disappointed, and annoyed, to be shown the basement room with all of us cramped into one space. I must say though that on complaining to the manager, he did his best to find us something more suitable and offered a full refund if still not happy. Apparently they only have three Quin rooms and they were all taken. I was shown two other room options in different hotels, next door and up the square, which were still not what we had booked. We tried to find another option elsewhere but it was Saturday and everywhere was booked, so had little option but to go with the second room option in the 'hotel' next door, room 62. I suspect this is a bedsit as it was unlike the other rooms seen as it had a kitchen sink and cupboards in a bathroom with hairdrier and kettle, which I am sure contravenes some Health & Safety clause. There were multiple TV, lamps and freeview cables connected into a multiplug next to an electric fire which did not look too safe either. The shower control was installed upside down with the flexihose coming out of the top instead of the bottom, though it still worked well. On the plus side, the staff were pleasant and helpful, the room was clean and tidy, beds and linen were immaculate and comfortable, and plasma TV and wifi worked fine.
We were given a £20 off the cost (£270) and a bottle of wine and chocolates for our disappointment. I made the point though that the website depicts a much nicer hotel and is very misleading. Indeed if we had known what the rooms were actually like we would not have booked at all. The manager understood this and said he would change the website to say there are only three Quin rooms available like the one on the site, as this is not stated. I shall be watching to see if he does. My advice would be to ring him (Patrick) and check which room he is giving you to avoid any disappointment when you arrive.

Dear Guest

Our hotel has 3 quin rooms and are allocated on arrival at the hotel. We know rooms that sleep five 5 people are very hard to come by and normally families of this size have to book between 2 - 3 rooms to accomodate everyone . So we think we are making families of 5 happy by providing this service as a much more afforadable and convenient option.

We have tried hard to make all our rooms unique as the building and size of the property dictate . Our quin rooms all vary in size and located throughout our building . However they all look similair and well appointed

The room you stayed in : Has a 32 " plamsa tv, 32 Frieview channels, Free WifFi access in the room , private shower and toilet which are separated areas, a Kitchenette , 2 double bed and a single bed . All located on the ground floor for easy access . All for £150 per night which is extremely reasonable for £30 per person per night in central London including VAT and breakfast.

We did our best to make you happy but at that stage i think your mind was made up .

This is the first ever time someone has not liked this room ( Room 62) . All of our previous guests have commented on how lovely the room was . I do believe myself that the room is one of the best in the area and in our rate category .

As a hotel owner/manager its always hard to make absolutely everyone happy. We do try our best to keep these numbers high. We listen to our guests comments and are always trying to improve the hotel. In this case in particular I feel we have really tried to make you happy . I dont feel the pictures you have taken reflect the room properly at all. I will be encouraging all guests who stay in this room to leave us feedback on the room as I am sure from past performance that the comments will be positive.

Relating to your views regarding the multiplug situation, this was a temporary problem which has now been rectified .

Many thanks

Patrick

Stayed two nights with a friend on a leisure break. Very good location to both Kings Cross & St Pancras stations and the underground.

Room was small but compact, had all the basic needs. Could have done with a good dust in the drawer's, but otherwise I was very happy with the general cleanliness of the room.

We had to go over the road to another hotel for breakfast which was the only down side to the stay.

Staff were very friendly and accommodating.
