“Good Location for Excel Arena”
Reviewed October 13, 2013 via mobile

Stayed here for one night. Very close to London City airport and the Excel Arena is only a 5 min walk away. In fact I also walked from the airport and it only took me 10mins. Hotel is clean and the room I stayed at facing the airport was very quiet. The food is only average and the breakfast has a very limited choice.

Good size rooms which have been recently refurbished. Only bad thing was the TV which was awful (4:3 aspect, bad sound and picture). Location is about 10 mins walk from either City Airport DLR or Pontoon Dock DLR but either way it is not a particularly pleasant walk, and after dark it can feel rather abandoned and lonely around these parts. However Canary Wharf is only 15 minutes away via Jubilee at Canning Town so location is convenient. Rooms were well insulated so no discernible aircraft noise in the early mornings. Thames Barrier gardens are close by for a bit of green space (the cafe is good there too) but apart from this there's nothing to keep you in the local area. Overall a typical Travelodge which provides clean, cheap and convenient accommodation.

I stay here quite regularly and have always found the staff to be friendly and extremely helpful. Stayed here on Sat 5th Oct to find the hotel has been totally revamped. Reception and restaurant looks great with new carpets and paint job and the room was much better too new paint job, new carpets and new comfortable beds. Only downside was the slight smell of paint but on chatting to reception found out my room was only finished the previous day. The staff were really excited as they are going to be getting new tables and chairs in the restaurant so a good cheery atmosphere all round. A good hotel now even better I will be telling eveyone xxx

The hotel isnt even close to the airport and took alot of guess work to find, Once I got inside all I could see was out of order signs from the computer vending machines toilets to the staff who all seemed to be hiding I asked for advice about getting the dlr as we planned to go sight seeing the directions where afwul might have well of said just find it yourself, the room basic but clean, no cups 1 towel between 2 of us I know its only a travel lodge and you get what you pay for but had alot better at premier ins for less just not impressed with location and service.

As a frequent Travelodge guest up and down the country I am used to the cheap, chipped and hopefully clean experience of Travelodge.

I booked this one as I wanted a base for 2 nights near London but not in the centre. It was booked before the refurbishing exercise that it is just undergoing. We expected a sofa bed and a double bed in our family room but instead got a lovely large bed and new thick pillows.
The sofa beds have now been got rid of and replaced with under the bed pull out beds. I usually make up the sofa beds myself with the linen usually left but with these new varieties I was unable to lift up the mattress and lift out the legs and no linen was provided. The cover on the mattress was severely soiled and I had to ask the already busy and multitasking receptionist to do it for me. The offending mattress cover was removed but a new one was not applied. The bottom sheet was just laid over and consequently moved around with me. The "put me up bed" was extremely uncomfortable(I considered the floor as an alternative but it wasn't clean enough) and tried to tip up as I got out if I wasn't careful. This is considering I am less than average height and weight is very worrying. It also clanked and rattled. There was a large dirty mark on the "new" curtains.

Staff were stretched but always pleasant and the public toilets were out of order, check in machine out of order..etc.

The cleanliness wasn't up to scratch and towels removed and not replaced. I am informed there were new cleaners.

For a newly refurbished room it was disappointing and I hope that Travelodge reconsider their decision and return the sofa beds. I believe that any room for twin occupancy is liable to use the "put me up" bed.

The location is excellent very near the Docklands light railway at City Airport and has 2 what I consider safe routes to it, taking us 6 minutes(including elderly person with walking stick) in well lit areas.

The bar was reasonably priced, although due to staff sickness it proved challenging at times to get served. i.e we went away and came back a hour later.

External noise was minimal considering we were overlooking a busy airport runway.

The front of house staff here deserve a medal it appears they are fighting the odds. The staff alone make me want to consider using this hotel again but the prospect of the "put me up" bed puts me off. I understand Travelodge are rolling out this set up to all their locations.

I look forward to if I do use this hotel again to returning to my usual Travelodge routine of just waving at the staff or gossiping as I go in and out and not like this time having to go and say " sorry it's me again but.." in fact I just stopped telling the staff.

10 min walk to catch the dlr , but the walk is through a london council estate could get easily lost and intimidated. The staff weren't very helpful, stayed for 2 nights they took the towels away and only put 1 back between the two of us. The rooms were basic tv had the wrong remote and didn't work. Wouldn't stay in this location again !
