We stayed at Excelsior Hotel week of Feb 16 - Feb 24. This is a fabulous hotel in an excellent location. Our room was on the 2nd floor facing the street. I don't understand why this hotel has gotten some bad reviews; we didn't experience any of the issues some of the other reviewers had. While the rooms are petite, ours was well appointed -- we had a king-sized bed which was clean, comfortable and warm. We had a wall-mounted flat screen TV which worked just fine and plenty of channels. The bathroom was small, but functional--although the shower curtain could be longer which would have helped with water splashing onto the bathroom floor. Also there was a heated bath towel rack, which I thought was a nice touch. We also had no issues with hot water as there was plenty of it. We did not have breakfast at the hotel - we were very close to King's Cross/St Pancras and there were plenty of breakfast options there, as well as the restaurant directly around the corner from The Excelsior.

The staff member who checked us in was helpful and pleasant, he took our bags and locked them in a basement area since our room wasn't ready when we arrived (we were early). All in all we enjoyed this hotel, would recommend it to others and will certainly stay there again if we happen to revisit London.

Room Tip: We stayed on second floor, but this hotel does not have a lift so keep this in mind if you don't...

I found this hotel via trip advisor, and then got to use the Apoda booking system - a first for me. Fortunately it all worked out fine. I arrived at reception and was upgraded to a double, having booked a single. This being Central London within the ring of terminal stations your expectations are not high at the price. What I got was a totally refurbished and clean room, with just enough room too walk around 3 sides, a decent sized shower, the rest of the expected plumbing, and room to open the room door + a decent sized TV on the opposite wall to the bed. Given the space, it was all well finished, it all fitted, and it all worked and the only minor quibble was I like curtains that exclude light. A result at the price. I can't comment on the single rooms as I never saw one.

Location of hotel was excellent for travelling from Kings Cross Station, and was also within easy walking distance of tube/bus etc. Both room and en suite were clean and well maintained, bed was comfortable and decor tasteful. A bit noisy during the night but we expected that, given the location. Would stay here again.

Rooms are small but uncluttered and real effort has gone into some of the decor. They are also very, very clean. Beds are good if not Marriott standard. Try to get a room with a balcony overlooking the square.

Some small niggles. I go regularly (every week) and yet I have to re-register every time.
If your room is upstairs, there is no lift, the stairs are a narrow and there are fire doors to tussle with.
As a business traveler, a trouser press would be nice.

These are small issues though. It makes a great base in London

Stayed in the Melville Hotel, Argyle Square for one night. The room was good size, and clean. There were quite a few steep stairs to get down to the room, though not a problem for us, and the staff helped with bags . We wanted a room that was fairly close to St.Pancras station for an easy, early start but in a quiet location if that was possible in central london ! Well it was very peaceful a quiet square with the little park in the middle yet only a few minutes walk to the station and the area nearby for an evening meal A good choice for a quiet stay near the stations..

Just across the road from Kings cross is Argyle square, a leafy enclave which wouldn't look out of place in any town or city but when you think that this is central London you have to concede it's even more impressive. It's inside the congestion zone but over the weekend that is free and better still if you arrive after 1330 on a Saturday parking outside the hotel is also free, very rare in London. Sounds perfect doesn't it? Well it is almost, a small gripe of mine was the size of the bathroom but again you have to remember you're in central London and space comes at a premium so something that comes with the territory, the breakfast however is another story, across the square and in the basement with not enough room or chairs for the many guests it services but once again with the breakfast being an optional extra and o'Neills bar, McDonalds and several other places to eat in 5 minutes walking distance next time i'd just eat out. on the whole i'd give this place a 4/5 because of the points i've just made but as you've seen these are either gripes of mine or can be overcome with a 5 minute walk. staff are very friendly, welcoming and will answer any questions you may have so on my next trip to London i'll definately be staying again.

Room Tip: we were right at the top and at the back, will be asking for a room lower down and to the front next...

Have stayed here twice, both times the rooms have been extremely small, however they were immaculately cleaned and had everything you need. I had the room at the very top of the stairs, glad I only had a holdall. Friendly reception. Planning on staying again in April.
