“Great position, central, but in need of updating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

Firstly here's the context - I stayed for three nights in a single room with external bathroom in October 2012. The external bathroom was private (free upgrade from shared bathroom) and across the corridor.

Advantages
* central London, close to Hyde's Park, Oxford Street, Marble Arch.
* my room was quiet and the only noise was from other rooms (thin walls meant I could hear hair dryers, showers, slamming doors)
* the air conditioning unit did a great job on the one day I came back to a boiling hot room
* it was cheap compared to other hotels in the same location
* my room had air con, a fridge and wifi (somewhat intermittent!!)

Less impressive .... (Disadvantages)
* four flights of steep stairs from the entrance to my room (one more to go down to the basement for breakfast)... there's no lift
* on asking for gluten-free breakfast (which I had mentioned on booking) I was told there was "nothing" I could have... when I talked to the reception about this, they said things along the lines of "if they could understand that, they wouldn't be working here" and that I needed to teach the kitchen staff how to prepare a gluten-free breakfast. That gave me no confidence at all that my breakfast would not make me ill.
* the room was tired - dated decor, a very bouncy bed that squeaked, crammed with stuff (air con unit, fridge, desk, wardrobe, drawers) so barely any room to move
* the external bathroom (for room 19 on the top floor) was tiny, and there was barely any water coming out of the shower head - if others on the same floor used water, it turned to scalding dribble that was dangerously hot whilst I waited for it to change back. It took ages to get clean as there was so little water coming out and getting the temperature right required patience, no-one else to be awake and about 10 minutes of fiddling
* the food I could eat at breakfast looked like it had been left out overnight - the slices of cheese had that sweaty look which was very unappetising
* the towels were not changed during the 3 days I was there

Overall, I guess I got what I paid for. In my mind this is a 2* hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the road are quiet. Take a larger room with an ensuite and perhaps your shower will...

London hotels are outrageously expensive so £69 for a double room including breakfast via Hotels.com looked a good price.
On arrival we were allocated a “basic standard room” (room 9). This meant a room facing on to the road so a bit noisy. Most importantly the room was not en suite but shared a bathroom with an adjoining room! We missed the 'shared bathroom' note on the Hotel.com site as the hotel’s leaflet claims all rooms are en suite. The room also looked like it had been furnished from a jumble sale with random pieces of furniture and we couldn’t get the TV to work! The air conditioning unit was a portable one that needed the hose putting out through the window!! As the hotel was fully booked we couldn’t change.
On the positive side: the room was well equipped and clean (if shabby); the bed was comfy; the staff were friendly and the continental breakfast comprehensive with a very reasonable £3:00 upgrade available for a cooked breakfast.
The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from several tube stations.

Well I can't fault the hotel for Value we were on the Back so had a good sleep .A Few Stairs to Climb (No Lift) So not to good for anybody with mobility Problems. Room was clean with usual facilites for making Coffee etc. En suite OK did the job. We stayed over night and was here for 2 Days one for a sight see the other for the Paralympics The Location is excellent for Oxford Street (Great Shopping) and Marble Arch Central line took us straight to Stratford. Breakfast fine Small Dining room but served the purpose. No Complaints.( Ann and Tony )

Stayed here with my girlfriend for 1 night.

For the price we were very happy, on arrival we were asked to swap to basement room (didn't bother us only there to sleep really). Left bags with staff they put them in room when ready so didn't have to carry them whilst out.

Room was large, 2 singles, 1 double, fridge,Tv, en-suite, table chairs and a sette. Nice and quiet because in basement. Shower was nice and hot/powerful. My only problem was room and shower were clean but looked grubby (hard to explain) but was definitely clean(lick of paint maybe??).

Fresh towels and toiletries on beds.

Breakfast was lovely, breakfast room quite small though.

All staff very pleasant.

Great location 10mins to Oxford street (walk) 15mins to nearest tube station (bond).

All for £69 BARGAIN.

Our first impression of this hotel was the reception, in the basement, in a very dark office space with no window - not the most welcoming. After paying our money - yes a very reasonable £42 each for a three person room (i.e. costing worked out per person not per room!), we were shown to our room. We had to leave the basement reception and go outside to the building next door. We were in room 29 which was up quite a few stairs (no lifts). This room could have been lovely with three large windows overlooking the street, however it was very, very dated. The TV was balanced on top of an old pine dining table which was covered with a plastic table cloth. The kitchenette (??? not sure what that was doing in a hotel room) was mismatched, old and didn't look to be particularly safe i.e. wires and extension leads with plugs in hanging around the wall. The curtains were very grubby, along with the carpets and bathroom. There was also a large, portable air conditioning unit in the room, however this was very noisy when used and the pipe coming from it was hung out of the window (so together with traffic noise on what is a busy road made for a poor night's sleep!!). The ONLY redeeming feature was that at least the bed sheets were CLEAN and freshly laundered!!!! We decided not to partake in breakfast the next morning (included in the price) after smelling the dining room in the basement near the reception, so cannot comment on that! All in all, we wouldn't recommend this hotel - you are much better off getting on the tube and staying at a Premier Inn a bit further out!

This hotel is in the perfect location, and surely any other hotel in Gloucester Place would charge a higher price just for this! 7 minutes up the street to walk to Marks & Spencers on Oxford Street and 5 minutes down to Baker street tube station and, of course, there is a bus stop going northwards almost at the door step. We found ordering "quiet" room in advance, actually does ensure that- a perfect night's sleep.
My husband and I, both well over 70, could find the absence of a lift off-putting, but when ordering a room on the first floor, it is no problem at all - and what a joy to find the cold water device just outside the door. We found the staff very friendly and helpful, and ask for "The Boss" and you will be completely charmed. We have recommended The Gloucester Place to numerous friends and family members, all of whom have been most satisfied.
N.B. Very soon there will be more rooms to choose from, owing to a large extension!

Room Tip: Ask for a side or back room - view is not important at all!!
