“Old style hotel, friendly staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2014

The hotel is close to Euston Station and the British Museum. Two blocks to Goodge Street Tube. It's an 18th century building. We had a very small two single bed room with shared bath for about 85GBP. There is a sink in the room, TV, fan, not much else, very little room even for suitcases. Room was clean. One towel per person. The manager is very helpful and friendly and very knowlegeable about London. He says they are currently 65% en suite and plan to convert more rooms to en suite. There is a downstairs lounge/dining room with a TV and a PC. Breakfast is cooked to order and very good. Lots of stairs; definitely not accessible, and you haul your own bags. There is a sink in the room so shared bath is not really a hardship since you spend little time on the toilet or in the shower. However it is definitely an old style English hotel and best for people who aren't going to spend a lot of time in the room. Free fast wifi. No phone in the room. There is a nice garden at the back that guests can access. Windows open, which was a blessing in the heat, and the fan helped, but there is lots of traffic noise. Best to get a room on the back side if possible.

By US standards it isn't much but for London it is reasonably priced. But you should book knowing what to expect.

Room Tip: Get a room on the back side overlooking the garden

Small hotel in good location with friendly staff. Bedrooms clean and comfortable but spartan. Nice small garden at the back, free internet, large TV in eating area and newspapers available. However, breakfast was poor. Is this the only hotel in London which won't do poached or boiled eggs? Not helped by carton orange juice masquerading as the real thing, packeted butter and jams, tasteless tea, and cardboard bread. A shame, given its other qualities.

Room Tip: Choose one at the back for quietness

Jesmond-Hotel, Manager at Jesmond Hotel, responded to this review, July 2, 2014
Hello “Charliewatson7”,
Can I thank you for your review and your kind comments regarding our staff and hotel, and also say that I am very sorry to hear of the negative aspect of your stay, your opinion of our breakfast, which you comment on.
It is true that we do not offer poached or boiled eggs, and only serve an option of fried or scrambled eggs with our English breakfast. This is due to a small kitchen, and the number of guests we serve during our breakfast time. We apologise if this lack of choice was an inconvenience to your morning after your one night stay with us.
Our orange juice is not advertised as fresh, and therefore I cannot agree that we “masquerade” it as anything. We decant it into a serving vessel for ease of our staff and guests.
I disagree with your description of our tea and bread. We offer the better quality breads available to us, and our tea options are Twinnings, a brand I believe most guests would consider to be a good quality tea.
Jam, marmalade (both Robinsons) and butter (Anchor and Flora) is served from packets available at each table, and this is mainly due to hygiene and convenience.
May I finally sincerely apologise if the breakfast on the morning of your checkout after your short stay with us impacted on your holiday in London. We do aim to provide a warm and welcome atmosphere, alongside a hearty and quality breakfast and are sorry that you did not experience that with us.
We hope that all of our guests enjoy their stay, which then leads to a more pleasant time in London generally.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Glyn Beynon

We stayed 5 nights in a room overlooking the garden (which was a haven for some lovely birds), an oasis in a big city. Although small, the room was very clean and the bed comfortable. Glyn, and the rest of the staff, is so friendly and helpful. It's a real plus to have a hearty breakfast to start the day too. My husband and I recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: try to get a room overlooking the garden

We just stayed 4 nights on the 3rd floor, overlooking the garden and thought that it was a fabulous hotel with lots of history - ask Glyn the Manager, he has written a scholarly paper on the hotel, and knows its history inside out.
Start the day with a nice freshly cooked to order English Breakfast, then you are only 5 minutes walk to the British Museum, with free entry and some tremendous collections of antiquities, we loved the Ancient Egyptian exhibits!
It is a short walk to Goodge Street underground or 10 minutes to Tottenham Court Road underground station if you want to travel a different tube line. The red London buses have a stop within 2 minutes walk of the Jesmond Hotel that we also used every day. Fantastic location close to good transport links in a safe, pedestrian friendly, public transport - rich location.
The hotel is clean, the rooms are adequate without being overly large, warm, quiet, nice view, good comfortable bed, a few flights of stairs to get up, but I regard it as part of the charm of the building. The bathroom is cozy but has been newly renovated, it is a one person at a time arrangement that works well - if you try to put two people in there at once there will be some tears shed.
If we return to London, this will be the place we come back to, good value for money!
The transportation networks in this part of London put Sydney and other Australian cities efforts to shame - we never waited more than 4 minutes for a bus or train, that is amazing.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view room

I stayed here for a couple of nights on my way home at the end of my holidays. Glyn was a very welcoming host. It's a good little place to stay if you want to be close to lots of good restaurants and the British Museum. Very quiet and peaceful with good breakfast (if you like the cooked English breakfast). I had to swap rooms for the second night to a room with a shared bathroom but this was not an inconvenience. I imagine this place would be very popular in the peak tourist season.

This review is a bit late in coming as I stayed at the Jesmond in January. You can not beat the location, the friendly staff, and the delicious breakfast.I almost don't want anyone to know about this place as it is an incredible value for the money. The rooms are small...I mean really small...but that is the only somewhat negative thing I can say about this place. Personally, I didn't care that the rooms were tiny...but others might. Love the Jesmond and will stay again!

We stayed 4 nights in this beautiful hotel. The position is perfect, optimal bus and metro connections! The personal is very helpful and kindly. We recommend this hotel. Just one note, the bathroom is small but clean. we would come back again.
