Our family (four of us) plus my sister's family have been staying at '51' for the past 10 years. We are always greeted and treated like family by the whole staff. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The service is second to none. Araceli, the manager of the hotel, is warm, professional and runs the hotel beautifully.

Leaving is the only hardship we endure. Can not recommend this hotel enough. You will not be disappointed.

This was my first trip to England. Traveling with my husband, our two adult children, and an extra guest, the staff were amazing! Dinner reservations, theatrical and football tickets, any and all requests were met with promptness and a smile. Two blocks from Buckingham Palace and Victoria Station. The only thing that beats the location are the accommodations. Beautiful!!!

Stayed here on a recent business trip. The hotel I usually stay at was fully booked, so I selected this one based on the excellent rating it has on Trip Advisor. What is apparent is that the high rating is totally well deserved!!!

The location is excellent and very convenient, its a five minute walk to Buckingham Palace, and a couple of minutes from the St. James tube station.

Check-in was quick and easy, and they upgraded my room, which is always good! The room itself was very good, very clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated. The property was very quiet and getting a good night of sleep was easy. One minor issue was that given the layout of older buildings, there as few limitations of space - the wash basin area was a bit cramped and did not have much space around it, they had the raised bowl which is the current trend in modern bathrooms, not the traditional sink with some counter-space on each side.

I used the gym once, which was pretty good. The weather was nice, it was the first days of good spring weather, and I used the opportunity to go for a run, there are plenty of nice areas including St. James Park and Green Park which are very close by.

Breakfast was included, and it was really very good. They also have complimentary snacks and drinks in the evenings, but I did not try that.

The hotel and the facilty is very good, but what made a huge difference was the staff - they were all very polite and helpful, and that makes a difference!

Overall, I had an excellent stay and will highly recommend this hotel!

This grand old building was originally constructed during Queen Victoria's reign as an overflow annexe for Buckingham Palace. For major State events like coronations and funerals the minor royals could be accommodated here and walk the 100m to the main Palace. This helps to explain the great location in the tourist heart of London; not just Buckingham Palace but also within a short walk of Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Westminster and Hyde Park. For venturing further afield the St James Park tube station is about 200m away, with a couple of quaint old pubs in-between to distract the weary and thirsty.

The building is a bit rambling and complicated, and now houses two major hotels – the Taj and the Crowne Plaza. The Taj is further divided into the hotel and the Kings town-house apartments, each with it's own entrance inside the courtyard. This can be confusing, particularly for taxi drivers. The Crowne Plaza entrance is on the street front (Buckingham Gate), and the Taj entrance is in the courtyard. You might need to tell your taxi driver to go into the courtyard as this isn't obvious. However, the large security men at the entrance are very helpful.

Apart from the two hotels and town-house apartments there are a number of bars and restaurants on the ground floor that seem to operate seamlessly across the different franchises. We could eat in the Crowne Plaza section and charge the tab back to the Taj. The relationship between the two hotels isn't totally transparent – we booked through the Taj and stayed at the Taj but our credit card was billed to the Crowne Plaza. This wasn't a problem; just a bit unexpected.

Our Taj accommodation was a one-bedroom King's apartment. Reception is in the main Taj section and then you have a key-card that lets you access the separate entrance to the Kings apartments. Reception was excellent and designed to create a great impression from the outset – hot towels and fresh juice on arrival, abundant staff to take care of the luggage, a nice sit-down reception experience with very pleasant staff. First impressions are important, and at the Taj we felt welcomed and cared for from the outset.

We'd chosen a Kings apartment partly because we'd just come from a 2-week cruise and needed to do some laundry and spread out a bit. The apartment turned out to be perfect for our needs. We got the washing machine/dryer that we needed, a full kitchen that we didn't really need but was convenient at times, a very comfortable lounge room, beautiful large bedroom, and an excellent en-suite with bath and two basins. The apartment was serviced twice each day and maintained to a very high standard. There were enough cupboards and drawers and space that you could easily stay there for a week or a month. Heating/cooling worked well and quietly. Internet access was good (and free).

Overall we had a wonderful stay at this classy hotel and would definitely stay there if in London again. However, there were a few small negatives to be aware of. The main problem with the Kings annexe is that it is in a very old building, which inevitable causes a few issues. There is just one small and slow lift (elevator) to service 7 floors of accommodation. Fortunately we were on the third level so mostly we used the stairs rather than wait for the fitful lift. If we'd been on the 7th level we might have got mightily frustrated. Also, typical of old buildings, the window frames could be a bit draughty and rattly, and the view from some of the windows was less than commanding – think pigeon pooh and toilet pipes. Our bedroom and lounge both fronted the courtyard which was a nicer view but tended to get a bit noisy around dawn with kitchen deliveries opposite our bedroom and rubbish trolleys clattering over the cobbles.

One unusual sidelight; some of the other guests must have been a lot higher up the food chain than we grey Aussie tourists. There were some impressively beefy private bodyguards who kept watch in the foyer day and night while their clients were upstairs in their apartment. They gave us the eye whenever we walked in or out, but we think they soon assessed our threat level as being non-existent. Should we have said “Bang, bang”?

Room Tip: Small, slow lift in Kings annexe. Try for a lower floor and walk up.

This is a very overdue review for our stay at 51 Buckingham Gate in October 2012. Everything about the hotel was perfect. We visited with our two young children, aged 4 years and 7 months and we wanted a place that was convenient, had a kitchen, and had enough room for us to not feel cramped after a week long stay in London. It was a perfect place to stay with kids. First of all, the very nice concierge stocked our kitchen with bread, milk, eggs, orange juice, tea and coffee, biscuits etc. Breakfast was included in our price so we ended up eating in the dining room most days. On the second day we realized that in addition to the regular menu, there is a special "Indian breakfast" each day. It was invariably delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating of our children. They seemed to genuinely care if we were comfortable and made sure our children enjoyed the food as well. Afternoon tea in the dining room was actually quite nice as well.
The location was perfect--easy access to the Tube, a quick walk to St James Park (the dining room staff gave our daughter a bag of bread to feed the ducks), and a stone's throw from Buckingham palace.
The apartment itself was very comfortable. It was not quite as high end appearing as other Taj properties we've stayed at, but it is spacious, clean, comfortable, and the bathrooms and kitchen were very nice.
We had a 2 bedroom apartment and it was probably bigger than we'd be living in if we actually lived in London! The wifi was fast and easy to access. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, plates, and utensils. It truly felt like a home away from home and we would certainly try to stay here on any future trips to London.

Went there for a special week end with my partner and that place is truly 7 star service all the way. Hidden away from the city busy roads, it is a world apart. The staff are real professionals and yet most friendly and helpful.
If you are lucky enough to have afternoon tea in the library, go for it. Its a great experience.

You will not find a better hotel in London! From the time we checked in until we left, we were treated like we lived down the street at Buckingham Palace! The service was 5 stars, people were friendly and helpful. It is a great value for the dollar. Luxury, location and service. The perfect start to our European Vacation!
