Holiday Inn Express London-Swiss Cottage
Ranked #301 of 1,077 Hotels in London

Reviewed July 11, 2012

I had a great five nigh stay at the HI Express - Swiss Cottage with my family in June 2012. This is a modern building, which is a real plus in London. The hotel is down the block from the Finchley Rd underground station on the Jubilee Line, which allows easy access to all locations in London and train stations for day trips. The rooms are small by American standards, but are clean and pleasant and a real bargain at London prices. Storage space in the room is limited, however, with only some shelving and a small hanger rack rather than dressers and closets. AC is available in each room, but we had to call the front desk to get it turned on (it came on very quickly). Internet access is available for a fee, but if you join the HI Priority One club (for free) you get 1-hour of free Wi-Fi access each day. Priority One members also get a free local newspaper of their choice each day. There are several good neighborhood restaurants in the area and I recommend Passage to India if you want Indian food. The hotel provides a free English breakfast, but it is not geared to the health-conscious. If you'd like to acquire some food of your own, there is a Sainsbury supermarket in the mini-mall across the street and another by the underground stop. There are no refrigerators in the rooms, however, so your options are a bit limited. The staff is largely non-British, which seems to be the norm in London at this price range, but all spoke excellent (if accented) English. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Street noise was not a problem at the back of the building.

Hotel is excellently located, best value for money.
Hotel stuff is very courteous and friendly. Breakfast is very good and promptly filled whenever needed. Both the tube and overground stations are a few minutes away. Good bus connections too.
Room was clean, sofa bed was comfortable (regular bed was too) and was quite.
We had a very good vacation in London and all thanks to this hotel.

We stayed in this hotel from June 11 to 17, 2012.

The room (502) was clean and very good, it faced the parking lot in the back of the hotel and it was very quiet. We had a lot of space because we somehow got a "family room" with a double bed and a couch, so it wasn't clogged at all! The shower was very good and with enough hot water to wash away the day's coldness (yes, it was very cold!). There were shelves in the bathroom which may sound silly but I loved because these hotel bathrooms are always so small and you don't have much space there. The only thing we didn't like was that the room had an "internal" door to another room. Though it was obviously locked, when the teenage girls that were staying in that room started talking really loud we could hear EVERYTHING they said! Even their TV which was always loud. But that didn't bother us that much because we were always up before they were in the morning, and at the end of the day/night we were so tired that their eventual noise didn't disturb our sleep. Also a funny thing is that on some days we would hang the "Do not disturb" sign outside our door but when we got back there were always new towels and toilet paper rolls (even though our towels were on the rack).

Breakfast was good, but not varied. We always had plenty of seats to choose from. The O2 Centre in front of the hotel is an amazing thing for travelers, we ate there 3 nights, and also bought some essentials at the Sainsbury's supermarket they have in the lower floor (walk to the other side of the mall and go down the escalator to find it). We specially liked the "Fine Burger Co." restaurant, delicious burgers there! Also the supermarket and restaurants were open until 11pm. There is a McDonald's down the road, if you go in the direction of the Swiss Cottage tube station, and it's open until 3 a.m.

Tube station Finchley Road is very close to the hotel, though I wouldn't say the hotel is very central. But at least it's in the Zone 2 of the subway network, which is good enough! If we were going back to the hotel after rush hour we would take the bus 13 or N13 on Oxford Street instead of the tube as it was nice to see some houses and streets for a change. Also the bus stop is right in front of the hotel.

When we were coming home we asked the front desk to call a cab for us, they booked a "car service" which I was afraid was going to be expensive since the guy showed up in a Mercedes, but in the end it was only £15 until Paddington Station.

Clean, modern, good breakfast included. Great location - underground is located just down the street and good bus links. Few mins in underground (Finchley) takes you right into the city ctr. Bus to stanstead airport goes from just across the street. There is AC in the rooms which can be adjusted to your own suiting and window also opens.

I stayed at HI Express-Swiss Cottage with family for a week on a family trip to London. I should admit that the room we were assigned was smaller than I expected but it was very clean and recently decorated. Tv, wifi, and the lighting system in the room were all perfect. The bathroom, in particular the power shower was great. The continental breakfast served at the hotel was the best I've ever seen so far and it did exceed my expectations. It's not at the heart of London, but there is still the O2 shopping centre, a pizza express restaurant, and cafes right across from the hotel. The bus stop in front of the hotel and the tube station (which is within a 10 min walk) are a great plus for access from and to the hotel. Strongly recommended, as you get more than what you pay for...

We are a family of four and recently spent 3 nights here. We were pleased beyond our expectations. It is a great location, close to the underground and within zone 2. There is a small convenience store very close by. The room was clean and very quiet. We were a bit cramped with the futon open, but we knew that from the pictures. We still managed to unpack and feel at home. The breakfast was good. We were able to fill our stomachs before heading out to sightsee.

We definitely recommend this hotel for a family on a budget!

The hotel has very friendly staff and the check-in process was fast. The hotel is great for family. The family room a bit small but comfortable. Travelled with two kids and they love the breakfast even it was simple but very generous. Free one hour of wifi daily (at lobby) and a free daily paper of my choice. The hotel is strategically located, only a few minutes walk to the tube station, a bus station right in front of the hotel, large supermarkets (Sainsbury at O2 right opposite of the hotel and Waitrose a few minutes walk). You will get very good price if you make advance booking.
