My girlfriend booked this tour for my birthday as she knows im a big ripper enthusiast. I was delighted when i was told and at long last was going to visit the london i had only read about in books . We arrived in Tower hill station for the london walks 7.30pm tour only to be greeted by about 100 other people . Naturally i thought oh we will soon be seperated into groups , no , only 1 guide turned up . Everyone i spoke to could not believe it and soon we all started making our way up through the sky scrapers and modern buildings stopping along the way to hear a story about the ripper . (anyone who knows their stuff knows the ripper did not strike in tower hill but Whitechapel) . The guide quoted wikipedia , and wrongly too , often naming wrong police officers and getting dates wrong. 40 mins into the tour i voiced a question, "Are we going to the actual murder sites ?" "oh they dont exist anymore" an interesting answer considering , Bucks row, Mitre square and Gunthorpe street all exist to this day . I waited about 30 mins before saying "are there any pictures?" Greeted by "There wasnt any taken" lol you couldnt make it up , simply google it and its there for all to see. We arrived in Mitre Square and we're pointed in the wrong direction to the murder site, "in the middle of the square " exclaimed the guide. (Far Left hand corner if you check your facts my friend). We continued on our journey and crossed over into the East End (the rippers actual hunting ground, check time ,1 hour 15mins into tour). We see a door way where a clue was left , brilliant i thought until i realised he was talking abou the wrong door , (real door is now a fish restaurant). Moving on we came to the end of our tour and at last the guide got his facts right , it was the right street, it was the right name but all the facts where wrong and clearly from copied from a 1970's book when little was known about the ripper. I must confess i found myself staying on the tour simply for the amusement factor and seeing what the guide would say next. The tour ended suddenly and i could feel all around me looking confused and saying "is that it "? A terrible night for myself but if this is what ripper tours have become then im going to move to London and start a ripper tour, the public deserve better.
