“good value in a great location”
Reviewed March 18, 2005

I stayed three nights at the Martel Guest House in early March, 2005, and found the accomodations comfortable, the facilities clean, and the location very pleasant. I almost didn't write this review to keep the place a secret, but owe it to the owner to commend him on a fine place. This is not the Ritz, but neither is it a disaster. Golders Green has several kosher establishments (try the fish and chips place) and the tube and bus station are a reasonably short walk from this B & B. I arrived at Cricklewood train station (King's Cross Thameslink line) and needed a taxi to bring me the rest of the way, but my luggage was more than I could carry on the tube anyway. I was very satisfied with my reasonably priced room, although it is a bit rough around the edges (sort of like home :-) The owner allowed me to have two parcels mailed to me in advance of my arrival, and I felt safe and happy in the neighborhood. By the way, there are Starbucks and Costa coffee shops between the B&B and the tube station, and the Starbucks has a T-mobile/BT hotspot if you bring your computer with WiFi. An ATM is just around the corner.

I've been there for 5 days with my family and we enjoyed our stay. Although the standard was typical for British low budget b&b (which means that you can't expect the curtains to be clean or even existent and that you shouldn't bother about holes in the carpet) it was quite ok and apart from that: Who stays in a hotel while visiting London?!
The food was REALLY good and the host quite a nice guy!

Martel Guest House in Golders Green, London was a disappointment. Don't be fooled by the nice website as I was. With moldy curtains, peeling wallpaper, and taped tilework in the shower, the place has a low-budget feel. The shower was a mere trickle, and the thin towels looked dirty. The phone did not work, but the innkeeper did replace it quickly after the problem was reported.

The innkeeper was polite, but not necessarily warm; he seemed to just be "going through the motions." Breakfast was adequate (if not monotonous), consisting of cereals, coffee/tea, juice, canned-fruit, toast, and the cheapest available, bologna-style coldcuts.

If only the inkeeper would spend a few pounds to fix a few problems, the place could be a great value. On the positive side, the neighborhood was quiet and comfortable. The high street was loaded with shops and interesting (and reasonably-priced) restaurants.
