We chose the seven course taster menu and asked the maître d to choose the wine. Superb. Every dish was fantastic so I can't say which was my favourite. I guess having a large a mount of truffle over Brie with fab olive oil is up there, as was the pear tart tartan.

Pricey- yes but fabulous and personal.

It is one of the restaurants that you will always remember. The décor and Matthew, a big fan of Tuscany, make you feel at home at once. The menu is limited, but you do not feel that your choices are restricted. The truffle risotto is a big wow and so was the delicate turbot, which gently awakens your taste buds. The pear tarte tatin is superbly cooked and the taste, enriched by a scoop of vanilla icecream, makes your mind travel to Paris.

Be smart and book your table now. You will only be able to be among the "happy few" in March 2014.

Bravo Marianne! Bravo Matthew!

Marianne has been open a couple of months, and is a delightful, intimate (just 14 covers) restaurant in Notting HIll. Marianne is there, cooking, and not just a name above the door, and with Matthew, the maitre d', they have created a truly scrummy restaurant with attentive service, delightful food, and beautiful ambience. The food is to feast your eyes upon; the scallops, pigeon and lamb we had were cooked to perfection. The chocolate dessert and cheese that followed were likewise exemplary. You know it is her life passion, emerging at the end of the evening to chat with diners and really understand her clientele and no doubt make small improvements, if any were needed.

As others have observed, this is a little like dining at a friend’s house as all the proportions are rather small which creates an almost homely atmosphere, but that is where any domestic comparison ends.

The service throughout was personal yet professional, the maître d’ manages the service laudably given there is no room for error as he is the sole front of house member of staff!

The first course was three burrata tortellini served on a very fine dice of vegetables and a consommé poured on top of this at the table. This for me was the weakest of the dishes I ate. The tortellini were well seasoned, but the pasta was just a little on the thick side, and the consommé and bowl were not hot enough so the whole dish once assembled was lukewarm and for me too delicately flavoured. On top was a sprinkling of micro herbs/sprouts – they didn’t add anything to the dish and the presentation was dainty enough without them.

The main course of turbot with a champagne sauce accompanied with beans and endive was fabulous. The sauce had the right amount of richness balanced carefully with some acidity. The beans were beautifully seasoned and were a great complement to the perfectly cooked fish. A final touch of trompette de mort gave the dish further richness and earthiness. It was some really top notch cooking and easily at 1* Michelin level. My only criticism is that the sprinkling (yet again) of micro herbs/sprouts was totally unnecessary. This sounds very petty, but at this level, attention to detail is key.

The finale of a pear tarte tatin with rich vanilla ice cream was a triumph through and through; a tarte tatin, made to perfection is always going to be a satisfying end to a good meal.

The passion and care that Marianne takes is evident in the cooking, but for me the experience didn’t feel generous enough for the bill that I was presented with. All it would’ve taken was an amuse bouche or two and a sorbet/granite before the dessert and some petit fours (regardless of whether I decided to take coffee) and the dinner would have felt that little bit more special and certainly appeared better value than a straight three courses. £140 for two with a glass of champagne each and inclusive of service doesn’t seem great value for one okay dish and two excellent ones… at this price point the competition could easily have at least 1* or if you go forty minutes outside of London (or at lunchtime), 2*. I almost feel that they should only offer 3 courses only at lunch (for say £35 rather than £48) and start at a minimum of 5 courses for dinner (certainly Thurs/Fri/Sat nights) at a slightly higher price as this would give the impression of far better value than the current format.

Saturday night at Marianne proved to be an exceptional experience. A warm, friendly welcome followed by the most delicious 7 course chef taster menu in a comfortable, intimate atmosphere. Highly recommended for special occasions - a real treat and great fun. Matt is a brilliant front of house and it was wonderful to watch the very beautiful Marianne working calmly in the kitchen. The food was exquisite, can't recommend it too highly!
